DJ Herz (elbow) placed on 60-day injured list

DJ Herz (elbow) has been placed on the 60-day injured list as he recovers from the Tommy John surgery he had last April. The move allows an open spot on the 40-man roster for Miles Mikolas.

Fantasy Impact

Herz had a solid rookie season with the Nationals in 2024, posting a 4.16 ERA in 19 starts. Over 88.2 innings, the lefthander struck out 106 batters including a career-high 13 over six one-hit innings in just his third major league start against the Marlins. However, he went under the knife last April and it's unclear how close he is to begin a throwing program. The current expectation is for Herz to be available sometime around the All-Star break.

Fantasy Impact

Herz is consulting with Dr. Keith Meister to determine whether he will need Tommy John surgery or if rest and rehab may allow for a return. Should surgery be necessary, he would miss the 2025 season and return sometime in 2026.

DJ Herz sidelined with UCL sprain

DJ Herz has been diagnosed with a left elbow UCL sprain, per team updates, shifting from a spring “dead arm” concern to a major injury.

Fantasy Impact

Herz’s spring velocity dip, initially called “dead arm,” reveals a UCL sprain Monday, potentially needing surgery and sidelining him for months—or longer—past his 15-day IL stint with the Nationals. Fantasy managers in deep dynasty leagues should stash him, banking on a 2025 return to Washington’s rotation if rehab succeeds, though surgery looms large.
