The Detroit Tigers have released pitching prospect Franklin Perez.

Perez, 25, was the headliner in the Tigers' trade of Justin Verlander to the Astros at the 2017 trade deadline. However, his time with the Tigers has been ravaged by injuries and underperformance. After tossing a 3.09 ERA at Double-A with Houston just 19 years of age, Perez has appeared in just 29 games with the Tigers organization, most recently yielding eight earned runs in five relief appearances at Single-A this season.

Fantasy Impact

Perez missed the second half of last year due to shoulder issues but had been impressing the team during spring training 1.0. He has now had even more time to heal and should be okay moving forward. The 22-year-old is on Detroit's 60-man player pool but it remains up in the air whether or not he'll pitch in the majors this season.

Perez was the marquee prospect sent to the Tigers in the Justin Verlander trade at the end of August. Perez has four pitches at his disposal, all of which he can throw for strikes. He has a relatively high floor as a mid-rotation-type starter and is just 20 years old for all of 2018.
