Gary Brown claimed off waivers by Angels

Gary Brown has been claimed off waivers by the Angels after being claimed off waivers by the Cardinals a little over two weeks ago.

Fantasy Impact

Brown was the 24th Overall pick by the S.F. Giants in 2010 and this is his third club this year. This will add depth to the Halos outfield as they figure out what to do with Josh Hamilton and his nightmare of a contract.

Gary Brown claimed off of waivers by St. Louis

26-year-old, OF, Gary Brown was claimed off of waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals after being designated for assignment to Triple-A Sacramento by the San Francisco Giants. Brown was selected 24th overall in the 2010 draft and has flashed outstanding potential while in the minors. There has been some speculation that the Giants' organization had been growing, increasingly frustrated with their prospect because of his unwillingness to make adjustments recommended by his coaching staffs at different levels. The Cardinals had an open roster spot on their 40-man roster, as a result of, OF, Tommy Pham being placed on the DL. The Giants needed to clear a spot for recently acquired, OF, Justin Maxwell. St. Louis subsequently optioned their new outfielder to Triple-A Memphis.

Fantasy Impact

This will be Brown's third year in Triple-A ball because the Cardinals have nowhere on their roster for him barring a few injuries. His stats suggest he should be capable of producing at the Major League level, but there are some major red flags as well. For instance, in 2012 at the Double-A level he hit .279/.347/.385 with 7 HR/42 RBI/33 SB and seemed to be on the fast track for the big leagues, if not for a drastic shift in approach the following year at the Triple-A level where he hit .231/.286/.375 with 13 HR/50 RBI/17 SB. Last year, he hit .271/.329/.394 with 10 HR/53 RBI/36 SB despite being caught stealing on an additional 20 attempts. With nothing to lose in the deal, it seems possible the Cardinals went out and signed themselves a speedier version of their beloved former prospect, Colby Rasmus.
