Griffin Canning has been scratched from Sunday's start against the Dodgers.
It isn't a health issue. The Angels just don't want to push it with Canning. The 24-year-old made 11 starts this season, posting a 3.99 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings pitched.
In what likely will be his final start of the 2020 season, Angels starter Griffin Canning turned in his best outing of the year in a win over the Padres on Tuesday. Canning struck out a season-high 10 batters while limiting the Padres to just one run on only two hits over six terrific innings of work. Canning did walk five batters but held the Friars to only two singles otherwise.
Overall, the 2020 season has been a disappointment for Canning who was a popular breakout candidate during draft season in the spring and tonight he illustrated exactly why. Canning finishes the season 2-3 with a 3.99 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 56.1 innings. The 24-year-old right-hander will again be a popular sleeper heading in to next season.
Angels starter Griffin Canning pitched well on Thursday in picking up his first victory of the season vs. the Diamondbacks. Canning was effective but not particularly efficient, as he needed 104 pitches to make it through five innings. Canning gave up two runs (only one earned) while scattering six hits and two walks and striking out seven.
Canning (1-3) lowered his ERA to 4.29 tonight and tied his season-high with seven punch-outs. He will be difficult to trust next week with a tough matchup at San Diego.
Angels starter Griffin Canning failed to impress on Friday night, pitching 5.2 innings in a no-decision against the Rockies. Canning gave up seven hits, three earned runs, and one walk while punching out five.
Canning was a pitcher that many expected to take a step forward in 2020, but his season has been plagued by inconsistency and ineffectiveness. Canning remains winless on the year (0-3) while posting a pedestrian 4.57 ERA and 1.37 WHIP. Canning has a favorable matchup next week at home vs. Arizona in his next start.
Griffin Canning pitched four innings in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Astros, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out four.
Canning hasn't been much of a fantasy value this year, posting a 4.54 ERA through eight starts. Fantasy managers should steer clear of him for his next outing, which comes against the Rockies in Coors Field.
