SP - LAA
Angels RHP Griffin Canning will miss the remainder of the 2021 season due to a lower back stress fracture.
Canning struggled for most of the '21 campaign and was recently demoted to Triple-A. Hopefully he's healthy entering 2022.
The Angels optioned starting pitcher Griffin Canning to Triple-A. In a corresponding move, the Angels purchased the contract of pitcher Andrew Wantz.
Canning struggled all season with a 5.60 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, 22.4% strikeout rate, and 10.1% walk rate in 62 2/3 innings. Manager Joe Maddon noted that Canning needs to work on commanding his fastball and be more consistent. Hopefully, Canning gets things worked out. Canning is droppable in all redraft formats. Maybe only in 15-team leagues, fantasy could hold onto him on their bench.
Angels' SP Griffin Canning (5-4) gave up six earned runs on six hits and two walks over 2.2 innings pitched in Friday's game against the Orioles.
Friday's outing was the fourth time this season that Canning has been unable to reach the third inning, this time surrendering six earned runs in 2.2 innings. Canning now owns an unimpressive 5.60 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP, making him relatively irrelevant for fantasy purposes. Canning will look to improve on the mound when the Halos face off against the Red Sox next week.
Angels' SP Griffin Canning gave up two earned runs on six hits, two walks, while striking out four batters over five innings of work in Friday's no-decision against the Rays.
Friday marked the third consecutive start for Canning where he threw at least five innings while giving up two or fewer runs. However, a lack of a consistent Halos offense, coupled with a shaky bullpen, always puts Canning's decisions in doubt. Canning will take his 4.95 ERA and 1.42 WHIP into his next outing, presumably against the Yankees.
Griffin Canning (5-4) gave up two earned runs on three hits, two walks, and two strikeouts over five innings en route to a no-decision in Wednesday's loss to Oakland.
Canning was solid for the Angels on Wednesday, giving them five innings of solid work. Unfortunately, the bullpen could not hold the game in tact to give Canning his sixth victory of 2021. Canning's 5.07 ERA and unimpressive 1.40 WHIP likely keep him on waivers in most formats unless he's used in a spot-start in a favorable matchup.
