Griffin Canning will visit a back specialist on Monday to further evaluate his injury.
Although there has yet to be a decision, Canning is visiting the back specialist to determine if he needs surgery. Canning originally injured his back last July and has been slow to progress in his rehabilitation. Prior to the injury last year he was 5-4 with a 5.60 ERA and 62 strikeouts through 13 starts. There's currently no timetable for his return.
Griffing Canning felt more soreness than expected after throwing a two-inning simulated game yesterday and will back off his throwing program for a few days.
Canning has been on the IL since the start of the season with lower back strain. In his three-year career, the right-hander has tallied an ERA of 4.73 and WHIP of 1.338 with 214 strikeouts. He isn't worth an injury stash except in the deepest of leagues.

Manager Joe Maddon noted that Canning needs to work on commanding his fastball and be more consistent. Hopefully, Canning gets things worked out. Canning is droppable in all redraft formats. Maybe only in 15-team leagues, fantasy could hold onto him on their bench.

Friday's outing was the fourth time this season that Canning has been unable to reach the third inning, this time surrendering six earned runs in 2.2 innings. Canning now owns an unimpressive 5.60 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP, making him relatively irrelevant for fantasy purposes. Canning will look to improve on the mound when the Halos face off against the Red Sox next week.
