It was almost the feel-good story of spring, as Benson came on strong in the end in an attempt to make the roster as a reserve but it was not to be. The good news is he raised awareness for himself and could be brought back up during the season.
Fantasy Impact
He'll just serve as organizational depth at Triple-A Gwinnett. You can't but like guys like Benson, who has played in the minors since 2006. He is such a baller and grinder for hanging on and chasing his dream.
He is now 7-for-17 this spring and in line to make the final roster as the backup center fielder for the Braves. He has come out of nowhere, having been stashed in the minor league camp most of Spring Training.
Fantasy Impact
This has all the earmarks of the feel-good story of spring. This guy has been in the minors since 2006, except for a cup of coffee with the Twins in 2011, and he likely will be on the Braves final roster. He'll back up Eric Young if he makes the team.
Benson has been an afterthought for the majority of spring training, having been relegated to the minor league camp early on. But the Braves brought him over to the major league cam as an 'extra' and have been impressed with his defensive skills and hustle. Today he blasted a home run off of Cole Hamels and had another long drive that was caught in right-center. Because of all this, he finds himself in the mix for the final roster spot the Braves have. He would be a backup for CF Eric Young, who is filling in for the injured Melvin Upton.
Fantasy Impact
He won't see enough action, even if he makes the team, to warrant a pick for fantasy purposes so there is no value in any format but bears watching in case of an injury to Eric Young.
