Jonathan Niese is expected to have surgery on his left knee according to manager Terry Collins. Niese, removed in the first inning of last night's game due to knee soreness, had been experiencing some knee issues over the past week. It is unclear at this point what type of knee surgery he will have, but his season is likely over. (Source: Adam Rubin on Twitter )

Fantasy Impact: Niese held no fantasy value prior to this news. If he is currently rostered in the deepest of leagues, he and his 5.50 ERA can be dropped.

In one stellar inning of "relief" work during the Mets' Thursday afternoon loss to the Diamondbacks, Jonathon Niese gave up three hits, six earned runs, three walks and two strikeouts. His season ERA rose to a robust 5.20 as the Mets lost 9-0.

Fantasy Impact: Niese holds absolutely no fantasy value in any league format. If he is rostered on your team, you should actually be penalized by co-owners and ridiculed mercilessly until your 2017 fantasy baseball draft.

Jon Niese will return to Pittsburgh to have his left knee examined. However, the Pirates feel he will be ready to make his next start. (Source: Bill Brink on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Niese isn't fantasy relevant. He doesn't strike out many batters, and his ratios aren't useful. If anything, he's a pitcher to target with opposing hitters.

Category: , Injury Updates

Niese allowed just four hits and no earned runs while walking two and striking out two in the Pirates 3-1 win over the Mets on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact: Niese led the Pirates to victory in the day game of the club's doubleheader on Tuesday. With the win, he improves to 6-2. Niese continues to rely on the groundball, which is not surprising, as he got 14 outs via the groundball in this outing. His ERA on the season is now below 4.00 for the first time since April 16.

Jonathon Niese (5-2, 4.36 ERA) squares off against one of the best young pitchers in the game, Steven Matz (7-1, 2.60 ERA), on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact: Niese has looked better here over his last few starts. His ERA still sits at an unimpressive 4.36 but is trending downward in the right direction. A win may be hard to come by against Matz, so the best hope out of Niese on Tuesday afternoon is a quality start. He is a middle-of-the-road option.

Niese allowed two earned runs and six hits while walking three and striking out six over five innings in the Pirates 3-2 loss to the Marlins on Wednesday.

Fantasy Impact: Niese did not pitch poorly, but was inefficient with his pitches as it took him 95 pitches to get through five innings. Though his season-long numbers are not all that impressive, he has given up two earned runs or fewer in each of his past four starts. A lack of strikeouts keeps him from being a fantasy asset in shallower formats, but he has become relatively consistent as the season wears on. He will get his next start against his former team, the Mets, on Monday.

Jonathon Niese (5-2, 4.42 ERA) is set to face off against the Miami Marlins. He is looking for his sixth win of the season.

Fantasy Impact: Over the last three games, Niese is pitching to a 2-0 record and 1.89 ERA. He even held a potent Texas Rangers lineup to just one earned run in his last outing. On paper, Miami is not as good a hitting team as the Rangers, so Niese has a chance to continue his mini-run. If you're looking for a potential winning pitcher with a low price tag then Niese is worth a shot in DFS contests.

Jon Niese throws gem Saturday

Sun, May 22nd 12:41am EDT
By Daniel Marcus

Niese allowed four hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out four over seven innings in the Pirates 5-1 loss to the Rockies on Saturday.

Fantasy Impact: This was one of Niese's better starts as a Pirate, but he wasn't rewarded with a win as the Pirates offense couldn't get going. Niese has been roughed up in several starts this year, but he now has three consecutive quality starts, so he is improving. His next scheduled start will come on Friday at Texas.

Jonathon Niese tossed six innings in the Pirates 8-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves. His pitching line read: six innings thrown, five hits allowed, two earned runs, two walks, and six strikeouts. Niese is now 4-2 with a 5.28 ERA.

Fantasy Impact: Niese is sporting an ugly 5.28 ERA but does have a solid 4-2 record. The first-year Pirate is off to a slow start out of the gate - his stuff hasn't been too impressive. In the last five outings, he's allowed five, seven, nine, ten, and ten hits. He's not a recommended start moving forward until he can continue to put together a few more solid outings; the Braves aren't the best hitting team in the world.

Jonathon Niese (3-0, 5.08 ERA) is set to face off against a dangerous Chicago Cubs lineup on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact: After a decent start through three games (3.50 ERA), Niese has seen his ERA balloon up to 5.08 due to two back-to-back shaky outings. Well, the hot-hitting Cubs aren't going to make his life any easier. Niese has a strong hitting team behind him, but is better off on the bench for this matchup; the recent string of play and opponent makes him a risky option. Oh, and he versus Jake Arrieta, too.

Niese surrendered four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings Friday against the Diamondbacks. He surrendered 10 hits and two walks and recorded just two strikeouts. He is now 3-0 on the season.

Fantasy Impact: It wasn't the best of outings for Niese on Friday, but the ball was absolutely flying in Arizona. Niese isn't a must add in most mixed league formats, but is worth monitoring moving forward, as he is a solid streaming option for good matchups.

Niese pitched seven innings and surrendered three hits, three walks, and no earned runs against the Brewers. He earned his second win as a Pirate.

Fantasy Impact: Niese was impressive, but this was his more typical outing in the sense that he struck out only three batters. Still, his 1.00 WHIP through three starts is helpful in any format and he is creeping into shallow league relevancy.

Niese pitched six innings and surrendered four hits, one walk, and three earned runs on Monday against the Tigers. He fanned five batters.

Fantasy Impact: This performance was better from Niese, especially considering he was facing a strong Tigers lineup. His strikeout rate through two starts is at a career high rate, and while it may not remain as high as it is now, an uptick in strikeouts could make him valuable in deeper leagues. Keep an eye on Niese moving forward.

Category: , Game Recaps, Rumors

Niese pitched five innings and surrendered five hits, one walk, and four earned runs on Tuesday against the Cardinals. He also struck out seven batters.

Fantasy Impact: This was not the expected performance from Niese as he is not known as a strikeout pitcher. The Pirates played some shaky defense behind him that cost him a few runs, but based on this performance there is no need to rush to add Niese to your roster at the moment.

Category: , Game Recaps

In three innings, Niese surrendered two hits, four runs, two walks, and hit a batter against the Phillies.

Fantasy Impact: Niese has disappointed in two Spring Training starts, but there is no reason for concern yet. There is some optimism surrounding Niese heading into the season due to his ability to induce ground balls in combination with the Pirates defense. He does not generate a lot of strikeouts however, which limits his fantasy value to deeper leagues or NL-only formats.

SP Jonathan Niese has been traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for 2B Neil Walker. Niese is expected to make an immediate impact in the Pittsburgh rotation. (Source: ESPN)

Fantasy Impact: Niese will likely be a #3/#4 option in the rotation for the Pirates, and will provide a steady presence in what was a very up-and-down back end last season. Niese had a rough season last year, with his highest ERA (4.13) since 2011, due in part to a plummeting K/9 (5.76 in 2015). He will be a late-round low-upside/medium-to-high floor SP option that has the most value in deeper leagues where stability matters more.

For the second straight night, the Mets offense erupted in Coors Field; and for the the second straight night, the Mets' starting pitcher couldn't give the Mets' pen some much needed rest. This time, Jonathon Niese was staked to a 14-3 lead after the Mets' batted in the 5th. Niese promptly allowed the Rockies to close the gap to 14-7, after a Charlie Blackmon 2-run HR, before being removed in the 6th inning with only one out. The Mets did go on to win 14-9 for the second straight night.

Fantasy Impact: After this shellacking in which he yielded seven ERs in 5.1 IPs (to go along with 11 hits and two walks), Niese now holds a 3.80 ERA and 1.34 WHIP on the season. He did record the win and improved to 8-9 on the season. Niese had actually been pitching better of late and does hold some streaming value in deeper leagues depending on the matchup.

On Sunday, the New York Mets beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-3. The Mets offense got a huge lift with three home runs by Kirk Nieuwenhuis. The Mets got another lift from Jonathon Niese who went 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while walking none, and striking out three.

Fantasy Impact: Niese has gotten better and better as the first half has gone on. Niese who started out very shakey this season, has started to pick it up closer to the end of the first half. This season he is 5-8, with a 3.61 ERA in 104 2/3 innings pitched, with 70 strikeouts, and a WHIP of 1.38. Niese will bring a decent top of the line pitcher to any rotation that is looking a jolt as they start up the second half. The Mets will look to continue their winning ways as the second half starts up after the all star game.

On Monday, the New York Mets beat the San Fransico Gaints 3-0. The Mets offense has continue to improve since going on a stretch where they scored very little runs. Jonathan Niese earned the victory pitching eight innings of shut out ball, allowing only three hits, while walking two, and striking out four.

Fantasy Impact: Noise has been a lot better as of late for the Mets, since he struggled early on in the season. His command has been better, but sometimes out his offense and defense struggles behind him costing him games. Niese is 4-8 with a 3.58 ERA, in 98 innings pitched, and 67 strikeouts this season. Niese looks to be a solid trade assets for the Mets at the deadline, but he will bring a solid starter to a rotation that needs a middle of the rotation pitcher to sure up their staff. It'll be interesting to see what the Mets will do with Niese, but for now he will look to continue to pitch solidly and help the Mets get back into the playoff game.

Jonathan Niese solid in the loss

Tue, Jun 30th 11:56pm EDT
By James McGowan

On Tuesday, the New York Mets lost to the Chicago Cubs 1-0. Jonathan Niese went seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out five, and walking four. The Mets offense was unable to back Niese and failed to come up with any run support.

Fantasy Impact: Niese has pitched very well over the last few times out, his stuff has been solid and he is able to go deeper into games. Niese this season is 3-8, with a 3.90 ERA in 90 innings of work, and has 63 strikeouts. While Niese has struggled this season to go deep into games, and to put together consistent outings. His lack of success isn't all his fault, he has been let down in many of his outings by the Mets offense that has been streaky at best. Niese will look to be a trade chip for the Mets to add some offense to their struggling team. But for fantasy owners he would bring solid pitching to the middle of any rotation, that could use a shot in the arm at this stage of the season. Niece will look to keep up his good starts as we reach the half way point this season.

The New York Mets lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 on Tuesday night. Niece went six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, while walking three, and striking out three.

Fantasy Impact: It has been a tough season for Niese, who has been let down on multiple occasions by the offense and his own pitching mix. This season Niese is 3-7, with a 4.21 ERA in 77 innings pitched, and he has 55 strikeouts. Niese has had a rough year and it really hasn't looked to good for him, he struggles keeping leads and allowing runs early in games. And his pitching mix seems to get hit around easily, and can't seem to get out of jams. In any respect he is struggling mightily, and it is time to drop him and find a new replacement. It'll be interesting to see what the Mets will do with Niese and if he will find his groove.

On Wednesday, the New York Mets lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 8-0. Despite the loss Jon Niese had a very solid start, he went seven innings, allowing three runs, while walking four, and striking out six.

Fantasy Impact: Niese has had a very rough season, he has been hot and cold and has been left out to dry on multiple occasions by the Mets defense. This season Niese is 3-7, with a 5.03 ERA in 59 innings, with 44 strikeouts. His season hasn't gone the way that he wanted, in his last ten games Niese is 1-7 with two no decisions. While he is still a good pitcher, he has looked uncomfortable on the mound and is being hit around with ease. It is probably time to look for a replacement for Niese, while he has looked pretty good he has terrible numbers. Pitchers like Noah Syndergaard, or Eduardo Rodriguez should be seriously considered, and would both be upgrades from Niese. It'll be interesting to see how Niese will respond to his latest loss.

On Thursday, the New York Mets beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4. In the game Jon Niese went seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out four, and walking two.

Fantasy Impact: Jon Niese got another no decision on Thursday, he now has not won since May ninth. Thursday was just another chapter in the awful season that Jonathon Niese is having. This season Niese has a 4.24 ERA in 63 innings of work, with 45 strike outs, Niese is also 3-6 with two no decisions. Niese has had a rough season, he has pitched pretty well in a few of his starts but then gets hung out to dry by the offense. But when Niese is bad, he is bad he can't seem to go deep into games consistently and struggles to keep is ERA down. If you do own Jon Niese I think it is time to drop him, he has had a rough season and there is no signs of him turning it around anytime soon. If Niese can some how find a way to turn it around, the he might be a good depth pitcher as we go down he stretch. But as of right now i would drop him asap, or at least bench him until we see if he can turn it around.

On Friday, the New York Mets lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2. In the Game Jonathon Niese went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out eight, and walking one. (Source: MLB)

Fantasy Impact: Niese's season has been that of an inconsistent one. He has not won since may ninth, and has struggled to go deep into games. Since May ninth, Niese's ERA has spiked from 1.95, to 4.43 in the last five games. Niese's struggles are a cause for concern, he has struggled to be consistent and right now doesn't look all that confident on the mound. Niese's record really reflects his performance this season, his is 3-6 with two no decisions. It might be time to look for a replacement for Niese, and if you are looking for a good middle rotation guy Rick Porcello would be a great pickup. Porcello has struggled in his last few outing but will look to bounce back in his next start. But if you need to keep Niese for some odd reason, I would hope that he can turn it around soon. Because as of right now, he looks like he is lacking confidence on the mound and it will be interesting to see what they do with him.

Since May ninth, Niese's ERA has spiked from 1.95, to 4.42 in the four games. Niese's struggles are a cause for concern, he has struggled to be consistent and right now doesn't look all that confident on the mound. Niese's record really reflects his performance this season, his is 3-5 with two no decisions. On Sunday, Jon Niese struggles against the Pirates in the Mets 9-1 loss. Niese went 4 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking four. Niese gave up four runs on seven hits. (Source: ESPN)

Fantasy Impact: Niese has struggled in his last few outings, with three consecutive losses. In each of his loses he has given up four runs or more, while working less then seven innings. After the loss today, Niese is now 3-5, with a 4.08 ERA in 53 inning pitched this season. Niese's recent struggles are a huge concern for the Mets and fantasy owners, Niese had started the season hot and cold almost splitting the wins and loses every other game. But Niese has struggled recently getting hit around, and looking less and less like a starting Major League pitcher. For Niese to turn this around he needs to gain more confidence in his pitches. Right now if you own Niese i would bench him and hope that he can figure it out. Maybe even drop him and see what you can pick up, Matt Barnes could be a good Reliever option for a team, also so could Brian Matusz after he comes back. Niese has been a disappointment this season and we will have to wait and see if he can get his season back on track.

Jonathon Niese struggle in Tuesday's loss against the Cardinals 10-5. Niese went five innings, giving up eight runs, on 11 hits, while striking out one, and walking one.

Fantasy Impact: With the loss, Niese falls to 3-4 this season with a 3.72 ERA. Niese has struggled this season to put together consistent outings, he has been very hot and cold from start to start. In each of Niese's losses this season he has struggled to strikeout people, while his walk numbers have been very impressive. It's not time to panic on Niese yet; he should be able to bounce back from this start. The next start that he makes will be very telling on how his season will pan out.

Jonathan Niese improved to 2-0 on the season as the Mets defeated the Braves 7-1 last night at CitiField. Niese threw 6.2 IPs, striking out five, while allowing four walks, four hits and one ER.

Fantasy Impact: Niese is a lower tier SP in mixed leagues. He is off to a good start on the 2015 season, with a 2-0 record and a 1.50 ERA. His K:BB ratio is, however, somewhat mediocre at 11:8 in only 18 IPs. For Niese to continue to succeed, he will need to limit walks going forward. He is scheduled to face the Yankees at Yankee Stadium next week in his next start.

Category: , Game Recaps

In the Mets 6-1 win over the Phillies, Niese worked out of trouble for most of the night. In 6.1 IP, Niese allowed nine hits, two walks and one ER, while striking out four.

Fantasy Impact: Niese doesn't offer much in terms of fantasy value, outside of deeper mixed leagues or NL-only leagues. In such leagues, he's a back of the rotation SP option who can be streamed based upon matchup. His next start is scheduled against the Braves at home.

Category: , Game Recaps

In five innings of work against the Braves, Niese allowed nine baserunners (seven hits and two walks) and three runs (one earned). Niese also struck out two.

Fantasy Impact: Niese clearly didn't have good stuff tonight and was also victimized by two Wilmer Flores errors. Niese, at least, managed to only yield three runs in his five innings of work, despite being very hittable this evening. Niese is a low tier SP in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues, good for an occasional spot-start depending upon matchups.

New York Mets lefty Jonathon Niese put up excellent numbers in Grapefruit League play this year. He pitched 16.1 innings and put up a 1.65 ERA with 13 strikeouts and only 2 walks.

Fantasy Impact: Niese ended the spring with six shutouts innings against the Nationals on Tuesday. He has always had problems with staying healthy but should be a decent fantasy option as long as he is on the field.

Category: , Game Recaps

In the 4 IPs, Niese also only yielded 3 hits (0 BB) and 1 ER against the Cardinals. It was another solid spring start for Niese.

Fantasy Impact: Niese projects as a decent late round pick who can round out a fantasy SP staff. His current positional ADP on FantasyPros is 86. Given this ADP, Niese should provide good value and the potential for good spot-start strikeouts depending on the matchup.

Category: , Game Recaps

New York Mets starting pitcher Jonathon Niese shutout the Braves today over 3.2ip. Niese threw 69 pitches and gave up 3 hits with 3 strikeouts. Niese has had a history of shoulder trouble but stated after the game today that his arm felt good.

Fantasy Impact: Jonathon Niese has battled injuries in his career and the southpaw has yet to throw a 200-inning season but he could offer decent value late in drafts. When healthy Niese has the potential for a strong era with solid k's.
