The Reds recalled top prospect SS Jose Barrero from Triple-A.
Barrero is a defensive wizard who has performed better at the plate in the minors this season. He's taking the spot of Kyle Farmer (paternity) for a few days. Barrero is hitting seventh on Friday evening.
The Reds announced they have optioned infielder Jose Barrero to Triple-A Lousiville. He has also been assigned to the club's taxi squad.
Barrero went 2-for-12 through six games this season. The two-time Reds Organization All-Star participated in the 2021 Futures Game. He is listed as Cincinnati's No. 3 prospect, per MLB Pipeline.
The Reds recalled top prospect SS Jose Barrero from Triple-A Louisville.
Barrero has hit .303/.378/.532 over 80 games between Double-A and Triple-A this season. The slick-fielding shortstop has actually hit better at Triple-A, though. The 23-year-old debuted last season but that was mostly out of necessity. Barrero was formerly known as Jose Garcia, and he ranks as the 15th overall prospect in Baseball America's midseason update. He's more of a fantasy option for dynasty and keeper leagues.
Reds prospect SS Jose Barrero went 3-for-4 with two homer runs in Thursday's game for Triple-A Louisville.
A phenomenal defender, Barrero's bat development is suddenly catching up to his glove. Over his past 25 games he's hitting .353 with nine home runs. A big league promotion could be coming by the end of the season.
Reds shortstop prospect Jose Garcia had his contract selected by the team on Wednesday, and he is starting at shortstop and batting eighth for today's game against the Brewers.
Garcia is a Top 100 prospect but has never played above High-A ball, where he batted .280 with 58 runs scored, eight home runs, 55 RBI, and 15 stolen bases in 104 games last season. He was, however, turning heads in spring training before COVID-19 turned the world upside down. Garcia is worth a stash in most formats if you have the roster space, but it's probably best to temper expectations given his limited experience.
