The Angels optioned RHP Keynan Middleton to the team's alternate training site.
Middleton posted a 5.25 ERA in 12 appearances this summer. He'll likely be back to serve a middle-relief role before the end of the season.
Keynan Middleton (elbow) was cleared to resume a throwing program Monday.
Middleton returned from his rehab assignment 10 days ago due to mild ulnar neuritis. He was given the green light by the Angels medical staff to resume throwing. A timetable for his return has not been announced. Middleton underwent Tommy John surgery in May of 2018.
After initial diagnosis and a second opinion, it has been recommended that Los Angeles Angels reliever Keynan Middleton undergo UCL reconstruction, the team announced Thursday. He is scheduled to meet with the team this evening to discuss a plan of action, plan of care, and recovery timeline.
Tommy John surgery is the kiss of death for a pitcher and means a recovery time of more than a year. Once he receives the surgery, Middleton will miss the rest of this season and at least the beginning of next season. It goes without saying, but this is a devastating blow to the young reliever who had been pitching so well for the Angels this season.

This is not good news for Middleton owners as ligament damage is never good to hear. The 24-year-old reliever could be out awhile. It looks like Jim Johnson is the leading candidate to get save opportunities followed by Cam Bedrosian and Blake Parker.
Keynan Middleton was removed from Sunday's game against the Twins in the eighth inning after throwing a pitch to Eddie Rosario with an apparent injury.
Middleton was brought into a tie game in the eighth inning and retired the first two batters before leaving with an apparent injury. Middleton had just returned from an elbow injury so it's obviously possible that it flared up again, but stay posted for word after the game.
