Konnor Griffin being called up for Pirates’ home opener

The Pirates are calling up Konnor Griffin for Friday’s home opener against Baltimore.

Fantasy Impact

Griffin was off to a fast start with Triple-A Indianapolis, hitting .438 with three stolen bases in five games. According to Jeff Passan, the plan is to have the 19-year-old in the lineup Friday at shortstop to begin his major league career.

Konnor Griffin reassigned to minor league camp

Konnor Griffin was sent to minor-league camp Saturday, and will not be on Opening Day roster.

Fantasy Impact

It was thought to be a bit of a longshot that Griffin would make the Pirates' roster out of camp this year. The No. 9 pick of the 2024 draft will not turn 20 years of age until April 24, but he is widely viewed as the game's top-overall prospect at present and should debut in the majors fairly soon. Griffin has slugged a stout .526 with four homers over his first 15 Spring Training games this year, but he's also struggled a bit with fastballs, hitting only .184 with 11 strikeouts in 43 plate appearances.

Konnor Griffin: Making Opening Day roster would be tough

Pirates manager Don Kelly said Konnor Griffin making the team's Opening Day roster would be tough.

Fantasy Impact

"It would be a tough ask," Kelly said. "Keep in mind he's only had a handful of at-bats at Double-A." It does not appear that Griffin will be on the team to open the season.

Konnor Griffin could compete for shortstop job

The Pirates are “strongly considering” giving Konnor Griffin a chance to win their starting shortstop job, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. The No. 9 pick in the 2024 First-Year Player Draft slashed .333/.415/.527 with 21 home runs and 65 steals across three levels in 2025, finishing the season at Double-A Altoona. Griffin won’t turn 20 until late April, and the last teenage position player to reach the majors was Juan Soto in 2018. Pittsburgh currently has a clear opening at shortstop and appears interested in adding more talent around ace Paul Skenes.

Fantasy Impact

Griffin’s potential path to the Opening Day roster is tied directly to Pittsburgh’s willingness to let him compete for the shortstop job, and the report indicates his stock in redraft leagues would rise significantly if he is given that opportunity.
