Mark Appel released by Phillies

Mark Appel has been released by the Phillies on Monday.

Fantasy Impact

The former #1 overall pick made 6 appearances for the Phillies out of the bullpen in 2022, throwing 10.1 innings with a 1.74 ERA but a 4.35 K/9. The 31-year-old will hit the open market and hope to sign elsewhere.

Mark Appel called up by Phillies

The Phillies have called up Mark Appel from Triple-A.

Fantasy Impact

Appel was drafted first overall nine years ago, took a break from baseball four years ago, and now finally makes it to the majors at age 30. He's been effective in Triple-A this year, with a 1.61 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 28 innings, and will be used as a reliever while Connor Brogdon is on the COVID-IL. There's no reason to add him yet, but it's a great story.

Mark Appel attempting comeback with Phillies

Matt Gelb and Evan Drellich of The Athletic report that former No. 1 pick Mark Appel is attempting a comeback with the Phillies.

Fantasy Impact

The 29-year-old stepped away from baseball three years ago and has since been training at Driveline Baseball. The No. 1 pick from 2013, Appel struggled mightily in the minors throughout his career. This would be a great story if he's able to make it back to competitive baseball, though.

Mark Appel undergoes season-ending surgery

Mark Appel underwent season-ending surgery on Wednesday that removed a bone spur from his throwing elbow.

Fantasy Impact

It's another disappointing injury for the rebuilding Phillies. The good news is that the former top pick should be good to go for the start of the 2017 season.

Phillies reassign three to minor league camp

The Phillies have reassigned prospect righties Mark Appel, Jake Thompson and Zac Eflin to minor league camp.

Fantasy Impact

No real surprises here. All three are projected to begin the year in AAA and each could see major league innings at some point this season, if they excel in Lehigh.
