Tigers GM Al Avila says RHP Matt Manning will likely start the 2021 campaign in the minor leagues.
As expected. Manning is one of the best pitching prospects in baseball but has yet to make his big league debut. Meanwhile, fellow Detroit youngsters Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal both debuted in 2020. Manning dealt with a forearm strain as recently as August, but as of late-October he was reportedly feeling 100 percent.
Tigers prospect Matt Manning (forearm) says that he's now 100 percent healthy.
Manning adds that his forearm strain from this summer was "mild." He's playing light catch while working on his mechanics, so it sounds as if he'll have a normal offseason. Manning will likely debut at some point in 2021, and he'll instantly have streaming upside in fantasy leagues when he does.
Matt Manning has a right forearm strain and has been shut down for the season.
Manning, the number two pitching prospect in the Tigers' system behind Casey Mize, was expected to make his major league debut this year. GM Al Avila stated that he could have gone through a rehab process and been promoted in a normal season, but it wasn't worth the risk in this shortened 2020 season. Look for him to be ready for spring training, provided the injury is not as serious as expected.
Tigers prospect Matt Manning has been reassigned to the team’s alternate training site.
This comes as no surprise as the Tigers don’t want to start Manning’s service time right off the bat. There’s a decent chance he could debut in 2020, but Casey Mize probably has a better case to receive a promotion if a rotation spot opens up. Spencer Torkelson and Riley Green were also reassigned.
Matt Manning was brilliant yet again on Monday for Double-A Erie, firing six frames of one-run ball while striking out seven.
Manning has been overshadowed a bit by Casey Mize this season, but the 21-year-old has been just as good. Manning how owns a 2.10 ERA on the year to go along with a 75/14 K/BB ratio in 60 innings pitched. He could debut by the end of 2019, though the Tigers might play service time games with him, which would delay his arrival to 2020.
