OF Nick Williams was claimed off waivers by the Reds on Saturday.
Williams was designated for assignment by the Phillies, but was claimed by the Reds Saturday. He will claim a spot on the Reds' 40-man roster going forward at the team's alternate training site. Williams hasn't appeared in a game this season, and was added for depth purposes.
The Philadelphia Phillies announced a flurry of roster moves on Tuesday, including designating outfielder Nick Williams for assignment.
Williams was acquired by the Phillies in the Cole Hamels trade back in 2015, and he batted .288 with 12 home runs in 83 games in 2017. However, he never developed into an everyday contributor at the big league level and may be done in Philadelphia. Williams is a former second-round pick who doesn't turn 27 years old for another month, though, so it wouldn't be a total surprise to see another team take a chance on him.
Phillies outfielder Nick Williams was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday.
Williams was once a highly-touted prospect in Philadelphia and hit 17 home runs last season, but he lost his spot in the starting lineup during the offseason as the team added Andrew McCutchen and Bryce Harper in free agency. Rather than letting him sit on the bench in the short term, the team decided to send Williams back down to the minors to receive regular at-bats while activating utility man Scott Kingery.
Phillies outfielder went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored in Saturday's win over the Miami Marlins.
Williams has been serving in a bench role for the Phillies through the first month of the season, even with starting center fielder Odubel Herrera missing the last week with a hamstring injury.
Nick Williams picked up two more singles against the Nationals Wednesday. He now has 20 hits and 10 RBI in the month of August.
Nick Williams is still only 16% owned in Yahoo Leagues; primarily because he doesn't steal bases. But, 17 homers and a .294 average makes him worth a look in deeper leagues.
