Utility infielder Romy Gonzalez (shoulder) underwent surgery on his left shoulder on Thursday and has been placed on the 60-day injured list. The move allows newly-acquired Danny Coulombe a spot on the 40-man roster.
Fantasy Impact
Gonzalez will miss at least the first two months of the season so the Red Sox will be without a key piece of their infield plans for a bit. After a slow start to his major league career with the White Sox, Gonzalez has performed quite well in a Boston uniform. Last season, he hit .305 with nine home runs in 341 plate appearances and has combined to hit .290 with 15 home runs and 17 stolen bases in 185 games with the Red Sox. It appears that Boston will now get a good look at Marcelo Mayer at second base to open the season with Trevor Story and Caleb Durbin occupying the left side of the infield. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is also in the mix.
Gonzalez (shoulder) has dealt with left shoulder inflammation throughout most of the offseason. The issue has prevented him from participating in any baseball activities during spring training.
Fantasy Impact
Tuesday will bring an evaluation of his left shoulder to determine whether surgery is required. Gonzalez was already unlikely to be available for Opening Day before the evaluation. Kristian Campbell, Nate Eaton and Andruw Monasterio are competing for roster positions.
Gonzalez (shoulder) received a PRP injection last month after shoulder inflammation disrupted his offseason program. He is restricted to playing catch and has not participated in other baseball activities.
Fantasy Impact
Gonzalez said Wednesday he does not anticipate being available for Opening Day. "Honestly, I don't think so," he said when asked about his readiness for the season's start. "At this point, I think the ramp-up would be a little too quick and it'd be a disservice I feel like to myself and the team if I'm not ready to roll and have a good build up." Boston had been hopeful Gonzalez would be available.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Romy Gonzalez still isn't doing any baseball activities.
Fantasy Impact
Gonzalez has just been playing catch. Cora said it takes time for the PRP injection to work. The shoulder issues has made it a "tough offseason" for Gonzalez.
Romy Gonzalez (shoulder) is aiming to be ready to play by Opening Day.
Fantasy Impact
Gonzalez is reportedly a bit behind schedule for the start of Spring Training, as he is still rehabbing from shoulder inflammation. The versatile 29-year-old is coming off a bit of a breakout season, as he posted an .826 OPS with 35 extra-base hits and 53 RBI across 96 games for the Red Sox in 2025. Gonzalez received a PRP shot a few weeks ago and still has his eyes set on Opening Day.
