Sawyer Gipson-Long (oblique) activated from IL; optioned to Triple-A

Sawyer Gipson-Long (oblique) has been activated off the 15-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Toledo.

Fantasy Impact

Gipson-Long did not pitch during spring training so he will report to Triple-A to get up to speed. Last season, Gipson-Long made three starts and five relief appearances with the Tigers and posted a 7.18 ERA with a 26:6 K:BB ratio in 31.1 innings. Prior to missing all of 2024 with an injury, he had much more success in his first stint with Detroit in 2023. He went 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in four starts, striking out 26 batters in 20 innings. Gipson-Long made one rehab appearance in Single-A Lakeland this year and now will join the rotation in Triple-A Toledo. He'll get stretched out there before a determination will be made on him rejoining the Tigers' staff.

Sawyer Gipson-Long (oblique) placed on 15-day IL

Tigers right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long (oblique) has been placed on the 15-day injured list.

Fantasy Impact

The move is retroactive to March 22. This spring's left oblique injury is the latest ailment that will cost Gipson-Long yet another stint on the IL. The 28-year-old has managed to throw just 51 1/3 innings in the big leagues since debuting in the 2023 season, largely due to injuries.

Sawyer Gipson-Long (oblique) throws bullpen Tuesday

Tigers right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long (oblique) threw a bullpen session on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact

Gipson-Long's oblique issue has kept him from appearing in any Grapefruit League games so far this spring. A potential swingman at some point for the Tigers this season, the 28-year-old is likely Triple-A bound to begin the 2026 season.

Sawyer Gipson-Long (oblique) throws bullpen session Tuesday

Sawyer Gipson-Long threw a bullpen session on Tuesday.

Fantasy Impact

Gipson-Long is dealing with a left oblique strain early in spring training, but it’s a positive sign that he has already progressed to throwing bullpens. He has a strong chance of avoiding the injured list to start the season. Given the Detroit Tigers’ pitching depth, he is expected to begin the year in the minors after posting a 7.18 ERA and 1.28 WHIP over 31.1 major league innings last season.
