The Tigers have promoted reliever Trey Wingenter as the 27th man for the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Angels.
Wingenter has largely been on the injured list this season with a shoulder injury but has been pitching for Triple-A Toledo since coming off the IL. He was rocked for an 8.31 ERA in six appearances with Detroit while pitching to an equally ugly 8.56 ERA across 14 outings with Toledo.
Tigers reliever Trey Wingenter surrendered three earned runs in a Single-A rehab assignment on Saturday.
The right-hander didn't record an out in the appearance while allowing two walks and a hit along with three earned runs. In a small 4 1/3 innings sample this season, Wingenter posted an ugly 8.31 ERA with a blown save but his 3.73 FIP and 3.83 SIERA suggest he was much better than his ERA would suggest.
Trey Wingenter has been placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to April 19, with right shoulder tendinitis.
Wingenter will be sidelined for the foreseeable future for manager AJ Hinch, opening up opportunities for another arm in high-leverage situations in a re-tooled Detroit bullpen.
Detroit Tigers reliever Trey Wingenter blew a save in a 4-3 10-inning loss to the Blue Jays Wednesday.
Wingenter was called upon to close out a 3-1 lead against the Blue Jays Wednesday but melted down in a big way. The right-hander could not find the strike zone as he allowed a hit, a walk, and a hit batter before being removed with the bases loaded and none out. The Tigers signed Wingewnter after he hadn't appeared in the majors since the 2019 season as his one save from that year remains his only one in the big leagues.
Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch has informed reliever Trey Wingenter he has made the Opening Day roster.
Wingenter, 28, hasn't appeared in the big leagues since 2019 but has solid underlying numbers in his brief MLB career. In 73 appearances, he owns a 5.14 ERA, but also a solid 3.79 FIP, 3.63 SIERA, and an excellent 33.1% K-rate. He'll look to contribute to a new-look Tigers bullpen in 2023.
