Elder's four-seam fastball sat at 92.8 mph overall last season but jumped to 93.7 mph during his final seven outings. He compiled a 2.82 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with 41 strikeouts against eight walks across 44.2 innings over that stretch.

Elder credited the velocity uptick to training with biomechanics expert Bob Keyes, whose previous clients include Hall of Famers Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson and Greg Maddux. His four-seamer averaged 93.3 mph in Wednesday's spring debut against Pittsburgh, where he allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts and no walks over two innings. "He was popping a lot of 95s late in the season last year," manager Walt Weiss said.
