RP - OAK
Expert NoteView More Notes
Earlier this offseason Oakland general manager David Frost named Diekman as the top internal candidate to close. Simply put, he's next in line to serve as an "out-of-nowhere" closer for the A's, following Blake Treinen and Liam Hendriks as of late. Diekman's 98th percentile whiff rate makes him an attractive late-round option for those chasing saves.

Jake Diekman top internal candidate to take over as A's closer
A's GM David Frost says LHP Jake Diekman is currently the top internal candidate to take over as Oakland's closer in 2021.
The organization is fully expected to let closer Liam Hendriks leave as a free agent, which leaves the opening for Diekman to take over. The 33-year-old had a breakout season with the A's in 2020, posting a 0.42 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings. However, he also walked 12 batters during that time. Diekman was close to un-hittable, but control was an issue. There's a chance that Oakland brings in competition, but for now fantasy players can operate under the assumption that Diekman is the guy.
