After the sudden news that Kyrie Irving will miss the rest of the season, the Celtics sign Jonathan Gibson to a deal for the rest of the season. Xavier Silas has been waived in a corresponding move.
Fantasy Impact
Gibson played some with the Mavericks over the past season and could see minutes until Marcus Smart comes back. He's off the radar right now but check back in a few games.
Jonathan Gibson has been waived by the Dallas Mavericks in order to make room for Pierre Jackson. Gibson had a few solid games this season for the Mavericks and could latch on to another team in need of guard depth at some point this season.
Fantasy Impact
Gibson was primarily guard depth with so many injuries to Mavericks guards including Seth Curry, J.J Barea, Devin Harris and Deron Williams. Gibson can be left on the waiver wire even if picked up.
Jonathan Gibson followed up his 26-point performance Saturday with a dud against the Spurs Monday night. He scored seven points on 2-of-6 shooting and dished out only two assists in 15 minutes of play.
Fantasy Impact
Certainly the San Antonio Spurs are not an easy matchup for a point guard compared to the Orlando Magic, whom Gibson burned for 26 points Saturday. The next two games for the Mavericks do not bode well for individual matchups either. With upcoming games against the Clippers Wednesday and the Cavaliers Friday, it makes it difficult to consider any Mavericks starters this week. However, given the likelihood these games turn into blowouts, Gibson might see above average minutes and wind up with quality numbers.
About the only thing going well for the Mavericks these days is a relatively unknown rookie by the name of Jonathan Gibson. The 29-year-old from New Mexico State has played professionally in Turkey, Israel, Italy, China and Iran. And now, in only the second NBA game of his career Saturday night, he led the Mavericks in scoring with 26 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the floor including five three-pointers.
Fantasy Impact
If you pay attention to the NBA summer league, you may already be familiar with Gibson. If you’re not familiar with him, that’s fine. A couple of strong performances in the summer league and a stint with the Mavericks during preseason was not enough to earn him a spot with the team during the regular season. However, injuries to guards Deron Williams, J.J. Barea, and Devin Harris ultimately forced the Mavericks into signing him in time for Friday’s game against the Grizzlies. In Friday's game scored 11 points, grabbed four rebounds to go along with three assists. The Mavericks are so devoid of offense right now, they may just give Gibson more opportunities to prove he belongs, especially if he stays hot. You can get Gibson off the waiver wire right now for dirt-cheap.
