Ahmad Brooks, who was reportedly gaining some interest on the trading block, was released by the 49ers Friday. He was the longest tenured 49er and ranks third in franchise history in sacks with 51 1/2.
Fantasy Impact
It appears the 49ers are opting for youth in the front seven and maybe looking to save money by cutting Brooks. Brooks' production is going to be hard to replace, as he has led or tied for the team lead in sacks every season since 2013. Eli Harold figures to start in his place, and may have some value in IDP leagues that favor sacks if he can match the production Brooks had.

Brooks has random bursts of production. He is mostly a pass rushing OLB whose prime is long-since past and is a desperation play most weeks.

Brooks has played decently the last few weeks, continuing a pattern of him under-performing, moping when things don't go his way, and then picking up the pace as the season winds down. Brooks should have been a cap casualty, but the 49ers' apocalyptic off-season left them scrambling for continuity, and Brooks received a stay of execution. If the 49ers part ways with the ten-year veteran this offseason, they will save almost $15 million in cap space over the next two years.
Brooks had five total tackles to go along with his sack. It is his first sack since Russell Wilson week eleven.

He doesn't get consistent enough tackle numbers or nearly enough sacks to be fantasy relevant.
