Anthony McFarland Jr.
RB - PIT
Week 3 Outlook
Pittsburgh Steelers rookie running back Anthony McFarland has been ruled out for Monday Night Football against the New York Giants.
While James Conner is locked in as the lead back for the time being, McFarland's absence should ensure Benny Snell gets an appreciable amount of touches in what is projected to be a Steelers victory. McFarland remains an intriguing dynasty stash, but this injury combined with the unique offseason means it could be a while before he earns a meaningful role in the backfield.
Steelers rookie RB Anthony McFarland Jr. missed practice Thursday as a result of entering the NFL’s concussion protocol.
McFarland Jr. was drafted in the fourth-round out of Maryland and is expected to be eased into the offense. If he has a concussion, he may get off to an even slower start this season. His absence probably doesn’t have an effect on the Pittsburgh backfield at this point as it looks like James Conner is the primary ballcarrier with Benny Snell being his direct backup.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected running back Anthony McFarland Jr. with the No. 124 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
The Steelers take the speedster running back from Maryland with the 124th pick in the Draft. McFarland Jr. showcased flashes of brilliance at times in college, but wasn’t ever utilized as a true workhorse back. He’s a speedy back with quick feet and great hands and could be a nice compliment to RB James Conner in Pittsburgh. The Steelers got a good one in McFarland Jr. and he should be able to contribute immediately in a variety of ways.
Anthony McFarland Jr. (5'8/208) runs a 4.44 40-yard dash at the 2020 NFL Combine.
Anthony McFarland Jr. is an intriguing name to monitor in this RB draft class. His speed and athleticism on tape is right up there with the top-tier players. However, he lacks refinement in the more nuanced facets of the position. He needed to show up to the Combine and prove that he was healthy and that the athleticism on tape wasn't a fluke. He did just that and his stock now begins to rise again. McFarland Jr. will most likely be a day three player, but could make an immediate impact for fantasy football with his athleticism and what he brings to the table. He's a name to watch closely throughout the 2020 NFL Draft.
