2021 Outlook
The Panthers have cleared $19.9M in cap space this week by cutting Kawann Short, Stephen Weatherly, Tre Boston, and Michael Palardy. David Newton with ESPN is reporting that "The Panthers, per a source, plan to make a strong run at Houston quarterback Deshaun Watson if the Texans grant the former Clemson star his wish to be traded."
Fantasy Impact
This week has been surrounded by rumors regarding Watson's desire for a trade. There has been a lot of smoke coming from Carolina, including Newton's bold prediction that the Panthers would be willing to part with Christian McCaffrey and three first-round picks. While a trade is far from imminent, this is a situation that should be closely monitored. Watson has said that he will not play in Houston next season, and the Texans are saying that they will not trade the 25-year-old superstar quarterback. With Matthew Stafford and Carson Wentz both getting their requested trades, the Texans may be more likely to listen to offers. With the NFL Draft just about two months away, the Texans may want to get some extra picks in 2021 if they're heading towards a full-blown rebuild. Watson, who made an immediate impact as a rookie, is coming off his best season as a pro, passing for a league-best 4,823 yards and 33 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 444 yards and three touchdowns. With the midseason firing of the head coach and General Manager Bill O'Brien though, the Texans finished 4-12, and Watson made his demands for a trade known publicly.
The Carolina Panthers D/ST surrendered 347 total yards and 33 points in Sunday's Week 17 loss to the Saints.
Fantasy Impact
The Panthers' defense has had its ups and downs this season but ended 2020 on a dull note. Even with Ty Montgomery acting as the lone Saints' running back with the entire regular running back room in the COVID protocol, the Panthers were steamrolled.
The Carolina Panthers D/ST surrendered 386 total yards and 13 points in Sunday's Week 16 win over the Football Team.
Fantasy Impact
The Panthers had a tremendous game. Not only did they force four turnovers, but they scored on a muffed punt. The Panthers will look to end the year strong in Week 17 against the Saints.
The Carolina Panthers D/ST surrendered 291 total yards and 24 points in Saturday's Week 15 loss to Green Bay.
Fantasy Impact
While the Panthers played well in the second half, the Packers did most of their damage in the first half and held on for the win. On top of holding the Packers to fewer than 300 total yards, they also sacked Aaron Rodgers five times. They had a quality fantasy outing. The Panthers get Washington in Week 16 in a likely low-scoring affair.
The Carolina Panthers D/ST surrendered 365 total yards and 32 points in Sunday's Week 14 loss to the Broncos.
Fantasy Impact
The Panthers were lit up by Drew Lock and company on Sunday. Lock threw for 281 yards and four scores. The Panthers did manage to sack Lock once and force a fumble, but it was not enough to salvage their day in fantasy.
