2024 Outlook
Longtime Carolina Panthers defensive end Charles Johnson has announced his retirement after eleven seasons in the league. His stellar career includes seven playoff games and a trip to the Super Bowl, and all with the Carolina Panthers.
Fantasy Impact
Johnson didn't go out with a bang after a suspension and little to no IDP production for Fantasy Football owners. But his previous years in the league he was a master of sacks and a high-end IDP target. He'll likely be in the Carolina Panthers ring of honor and should be in the one for Fantasy Football if there was such a thing.
By cutting Kurt Coleman and Charles Johnson gives the Panthers cap space to explore options. Saving the team $5.9 million in salary cap space
Fantasy Impact
As rumored Johnson and his cap had to go after playing very little in 2017. He may latch on somewhere else in 2018, it would likely be a depth or heavy rotational player.
Si.com and other sources are reporting that Charles Johnson could be a potential cap casualty in 2018. Carolina could clear upwards of $3.5 million off the books.
Fantasy Impact
Seeing little to no playing time in 2017 it could be the end of an era for Johnson and his IDP owners holding out hope he could still be relevant for fantasy football purposes. At 32 years old at the start of the 2018 season, he is likely a depth player if he surfaces elsewhere.
Charles Johnson's season has been one to forget with no sacks, a four-game suspension for PEDs and now inactive for the Wild Card game versus New Orleans.
Fantasy Impact
Carolina over-all is healthy with the starting defense. Johnson has now become an afterthought for IDP owners.
Charles Johnson of the Carolina Panthers has been suspended for four games for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances.
Fantasy Impact
It's not like Johnson has been setting the world on fire this season with 16 combined tackles and no sacks. He has received nearly 60% of the snaps on the field each game on average. Those snaps should be divided up between Julius Peppers, Mario Addison, Wes Horton, and even possibly defensive tackle Vernon Butler who would be serviceable at defensive end for those four games.
