Desmond Ridder throws for 103 yards and two touchdowns in preseason debut

Falcons rookie QB Desmond Ridder completed 10-of-22 passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns in Atlanta's preseason opener versus Detroit. He added a game-high 59 rushing yards on six carries.

Fantasy Impact

While the Falcons opened with veteran Marcus Mariota, it was rookie Desmond Ridder who did most of the damage and led the team to a late victory over the Lions. He was the game's leading rusher by a long shot, as he averaged 9.8 yards per attempt. The icing on the cake was the game-winning touchdown with just over 90 seconds left in the game, where he connected with WR Jared Bernhardt for 21 yards on a fourth-down play. Ridder's chances of earning the starting job will undoubtedly keep getting better if he can continue playing at a high level the rest of preseason.

Desmond Ridder 'getting a handle' on Atlanta's offense

Falcons rookie QB Desmond Ridder is reportedly 'getting a handle' on Atlanta's offense.

Fantasy Impact

Ridder, a third-round pick in this year's draft, is trying to battle for the starting QB position in Atlanta. He seems to be getting the hang of the offense, making some nice throws and generally looking pretty good in camp. Veteran Marcus Mariota is still favored to win the QB competition, but if Ridder can impress this off-season, it may make that decision a little harder for the coaching staff.

Desmond Ridder signs four-year rookie deal

Just in time for Atlanta Falcons training camp starting on July 19, QB Desmond Ridder signed his four-year rookie contract worth $5.36 million.

Fantasy Impact

Previous offseason word coming out of Atlanta has said various things regarding the status of QBs Ridder and Marcus Mariota, but the consistency is often that Ridder will at least give Mariota a run for the QB1 position. The Falcons brought in Mariota to seemingly be the team's starter before drafting Ridder in the third round. Neither quarterback requires high investment in fantasy with Mariota going at QB31 and Ridder going at QB39, according to FantasyPros average draft position. The Cincinnati product was seen as a fairly pro-ready option in the draft who could start sooner rather than later, depending on his situation. Ridder is worth an investment in superflex and dynasty leagues with the potential to see action in the latter half of the season.

Desmond Ridder making a competition out of QB role

Rookie QB Desmond Ridder has been impressing the Atlanta Falcons' staff, including head coach Arthur Smith, and could make a competition for the starting QB spot.

Fantasy Impact

The Falcons brought in QB Marcus Mariota from the Las Vegas Raiders to give him another chance at starting in the NFL, but Ridder has a chance of giving the Heisman winner a run for his money. At Cincinnati, Ridder threw for 3,334 yards and 30 touchdowns, rushing for six with his legs. Both Mariota and Ridder are being drafted outside the top 25 QBs, according to FantasyPros average draft position, but should he find an early-season starting role, Ridder could surpass his QB39 ranking with weapons like TE Kyle Pitts and rookie WR Drake London. According to Kendall, it "won’t be surprising if Ridder takes over Mariota’s starting job at some point this season," giving the rookie interesting potential in superflex formats.

Desmond Ridder “light years ahead” of most young QBs

Atlanta Falcons HC Arthur Smith had high praise for rookie QB Desmond Ridder on Wednesday, stating “He’s light years ahead of most young quarterbacks, in terms of playing from the neck up.”

Fantasy Impact

Ridder, who was a third-round pick in April’s NFL Draft, has received positive reviews during the Falcons’ offseason program as he competes against veteran Marcus Mariota for the team's starting QB position. Mariota is the current favorite to win the job, but if Ridder continues to impress he may push for playing time in his rookie season. Third-round QBs don’t have a high hit rate as fantasy assets. Since 2012, only 8.3% of QBs drafted in the third round have developed into long-term fantasy relevant players, but Ridder’s advanced mental processing along with a favorable landing spot does provide a path to fantasy relevance as early as the 2022 season.
