Desmond Ridder being traded to Cardinals

The Atlanta Falcons are trading QB Desmond Ridder to the Arizona Cardinals as a part of a player-for-player swap.

Fantasy Impact

Ridder went 6-7 as the Falcons' starter in 2023, but Atlanta brought in Kirk Cousins to take over. Heading into his third season, the former Cincinnati product will get a change of scenery, backing up QB Kyler Murray. He will likely compete for the QB2 gig with Clayton Tune. Ridder threw for 2,836 yards with 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions last season.

Desmond Ridder could be a trade candidate

Desmond Ridder reportedly could be trade candidate this offseason.

Fantasy Impact

It was a rough year this past season for Ridder as he was benched twice. With Arthur Smith fired, the Falcons figure to pursue a new quarterback this offseason that could lead to Ridder being moved. It could be a fresh start for him.

Desmond Ridder tosses two touchdowns in Week 18

Desmond Ridder completed 22-of-30 pass attempts for 291 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in the Falcons’ 48-17 loss to the Saints.

Fantasy Impact

Ridder found Bijan Robinson and Jonnu Smith for touchdown passes in the loss Sunday. Ridder has now been intercepted in four straight games to close out the season. The 24-year-old will likely face competition in training camp to determine the starting job for the Falcons in 2024.

Desmond Ridder benched ahead of Week 16

Desmond Ridder has been benched ahead of Week 16 versus the Indianapolis Colts. Taylor Heinicke will start at quarterback.

Fantasy Impact

This is the second time that Ridder has been benched this season. Last time, his benching was brief and he returned to the starting role after just two games. As Kendall notes, this time could be different, potentially putting an official end to his tenure as Atlanta's starter. He can be dropped in most fantasy leagues and will certainly be a key name to watch during the upcoming offseason.

Desmond Ridder, Taylor Heinicke: no starting QB named

Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said that the team has not yet named its Week 16 starter at QB, whether that be Desmond Ridder or Taylor Heinicke.

Fantasy Impact

Ridder has already been benched once this season for Heinicke, back in Weeks 9 and 10 before taking back over the starting job. Ridder has been up and down in his sophomore season in Year 1 as a starter, showing some promising moments (three 300+ yard games) and some dim moments (three multi-INT games). Heinicke looked solid in relief in Week 8 but wasn't outstanding as the starter. While this could be a toss-up, Smith did add that Atlanta wouldn't bring in a third QB or consider starting third-stringer Logan Woodside.
