The Texans are expected to hire former Buccaneers and Bears head coach Lovie Smith as their own head coach, according to Adam Schefter.
This was a quick turnaround as Smith wasn't even named as one of the candidates for the Texans head coach job just a day or two ago where Josh McCown, Jonathan Gannon and Brian Flores were the finalists. Smith was the head coach at Illinois from 2016-20 before being named the associate head coach and defensive coordinator this past season for the Texans.
Per Ian Rapoport, the Houston Texans are drawing in on naming Lovie Smith their next HC. No official deal yet.
The Texans interviewed their defensive coordinator Lovie Smith for their HC job on Sunday. Reports came out early Monday that the veteran coach is getting close to being named the head coach of the Texans. No deal is official yet, but the Texans are confident in adding the coach who went 89-87 in his career as a head coach.
All of a sudden, a new candidate has entered the Texans' coaching search. Houston intends to interview defensive coordinator Lovie Smith for its vacancy. It also appears the team has ruled out Josh McCown, who was a finalist for the job heading into this weekend.
With McCown out of the running, it looks like the Texans' head coaching job will go to either Smith or Brian Flores. While Flores has impressive experience and Smith wasn't even a known candidate until today, momentum is quickly building for the latter. Undoubtedly, this will be a fascinating story to watch over the next few days.
The Texans' list of finalists for their head coaching vacancy has been trimmed down once again. USA TODAY's Josina Anderson reports that Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon was informed that he won't be receiving the job.
Gannon was one of three finalists for Houston's vacancy. Now, that leaves just Brian Flores and Josh McCown in the running. While Flores has far more coaching experience, he's currently in a legal battle with the NFL and has also drawn interest from other teams. Reports have also indicated that the Texans are very intrigued by McCown, the former NFL quarterback who has been coaching his sons' high school team. There's no set date for an official announcement from the organization, but removing Gannon from the list of finalists implies that a decision could arrive sooner rather than later.
Per Aaron Wilson of PFN, the Houston Texans have supposedly narrowed down the finalists for their next head coach to Josh McCown, Jonathan Gannon, and Brian Flores.
The Texans will probably take all the time necessary to come to a decision considering it could impact the future of QB Deshaun Watson and many other players and free agents. Even more so is the factor that if Flores is still a legitimate candidate the team might want to see how his lawsuit against the NFL proceeds. With that being the case it wouldn't be a shock for the final decision to come down to Gannon and McCown.
