According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Houston Texans have agreed to a six-year deal with San Francisco's defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans as their next head coach.

Ryans signs a long-term deal to be a part of the Texans' rebuild as they currently sit with the No. 2 pick and the opportunity to draft a franchise cornerstone. Ryans coached successful defenses with the 49ers, and the Texans have a defense that has been proficient at creating turnovers over the last couple of seasons. Ryans was also previously a member of the Texans' organization as a player.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the Texans see 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans as their top candidate for their vacant head coaching position. They share mutual interest and will meet with the team next week.

The Texans parted ways with Lovie Smith and have heavily pursued Ryans, who was considered a top candidate across the league for coach-needy teams. Ryans has found success in San Francisco, captaining one of the strongest defenses in the NFL. The Texans have talent on defense and have been effective at creating turnovers over the last couple of seasons, and Ryans could help usher the Texans into their new era if hired.

Smith is now the second head coach to be one-and-done in Houston. The Texans and Smith finished 3-13-1 and their win in Week 18 moved the Texans out of the first overall pick in the 2023 draft. The Texans will now begin their search for their third head coach in three seasons.

According to FOX's Jay Glazer, the Houston Texans may fire either head coach Lovie Smith, general manager Nick Caserio or both following the end of the season.

Smith, on the verge of coaching the team to the No. 1 pick, would be the second Texans head coach in a row to be fired after just one season. Smith has been expected to be on the hot seat all season, though. Caserio had only been hired in January of 2021 as well, and this could mean the Texans attempt to completely revamp the team.

The Texans’ defense tallied two sacks, two interceptions, and two passes defensed. One of the interceptions was against backup C.J. Beathard once the game was well in hand for Jacksonville. The Texans will take on the Colts in Week 18.
