Gainwell got a few touches in relief of Saquon Barkley, who operated as the Eagles' bellcow. If the Philadelphia coaching staff continues this trend, Gainwell will only have fantasy value as a strict handcuff to Barkley. He will hope for a more robust workload against the Falcons in Week 2.

Gainwell got the starting nod for the preseason game with Saquon Barkley not suiting up. Although he appears to have a leg up on Will Shipley for the backup role, Shipley also continues to play well during the preseason.

Barkley will be the starting RB and will get the majority of the first-team snaps during training camp, but as Philadelphia proved last season, they want to give Gainwell a real chance to earn touches. He had a career-high 84 carries and 364 yards while adding 30 catches for 183 yards. Despite losing the starting job to RB D'Andre Swift early in the season, he still played on 41% of the offensive snaps in 2023 and could continue seeing real usage.

Gainwell also completed a pass for 17 yards. The 24-year-old remains in the backup role and should not be started by fantasy managers playing in Week 18.

Gainwell mixed in behind D'Andre Swift to rack up 79 all-purpose yards on nine touches. The veteran tailback will remain the Eagles' No. 2 running back heading into a favorable matchup against the Cardinals in Week 17.
