Kenny Pickett solely takes third-team reps

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback has only taken third-team reps since joining the team, per Mark Kaboly of The Athletic.

Fantasy Impact

Pickett's relegation to the third unit is "not a good indication of what the Steelers’ plan is with their first-round pick, at least early in the season." He still has plenty of appeal in dynasty formats, but fantasy managers participating in redraft leagues might want to look elsewhere. It looks like the Steelers are comfortable rolling out Mitch Trubisky and won't rush to get Pickett game action.

Kenny Pickett signs rookie contract with Steelers

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported Thursday that the Pittsburgh Steelers and QB Kenny Pickett have agreed to terms on his rookie contract.

Fantasy Impact

Pickett was selected by the Steelers with the 20th pick of April’s NFL draft after having a breakout senior season at Pittsburgh where he seemingly came out of nowhere to be named an All-American and win the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. Pickett will certainly get every opportunity to be Pittsburgh’s QB of the future, but it’s uncertain if he will be the team's starter in his rookie season. Pickett will be competing with veteran QBs Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph in training camp. Recent minicamp reports revealed that Pickett has been working with the third-team offense and that Trubisky has been the most consistent QB in practice. If Pickett can close the gap and demonstrate the ability to run the offense at least close to as well as Trubisky then he would likely get the nod as the team's starter to enter the season. Even if Pickett is named the starter, he’s unlikely to provide much fantasy value in single QB redraft leagues.

Kenny Pickett plays with third team through spring practices

Kenny Pickett played with the third team throughout all of Pittsburgh's spring practices, though head coach Mike Tomlin stated all three QBs have a chance at the starting job.

Fantasy Impact

The rookie out of Pitt was expected to play with the third team early on while learning the playbook, but it was somewhat surprising to see him get no reps with the first or second team. Pickett's current ADP is 199, and he is the 26th QB off the board, five ahead of teammate Mitchell Trubisky who took all of the first-team reps during the spring. Whether the Steelers are easing him to his NFL career or he will be stuck with the third team remains to be seen, but fantasy managers should be aware of the QB battle and draft Pickett with caution in anything other than dynasty leagues.

Kenny Pickett has chance to start Week 1

Steelers first-round QB Kenny Pickett will have a chance to compete and earn the starter job for Week 1.

Fantasy Impact

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin added that they think he 'came ready made' and is a polished prospect. The team brought in Mitch Trubisky on a two-year deal this offseason, but he by no means is guaranteed the starter spot. The fantasy values of players like Najee Harris, Diontae Johnson, and Chase Claypool will be heavily dependent on who wins the starting job in Pittsburgh.

Kenny Pickett selected No. 20 by Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected quarterback Kenny Pickett with the No. 20 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Fantasy Impact

The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected their quarterback of the future in Kenny Pickett. Pickett will be expected to come in and compete with Mitch Trubisky but should be given every opportunity to start in year one. Widely viewed as the most (and perhaps only) pro-ready quarterback in this class, Pickett has all the tools teams look for in a modern NFL quarterback. A rhythm passer with plus athleticism and an ability to throw off-platform, Pickett is going to have some fun with Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool, and Najee Harris. Pickett may not sniff QB1 territory until the Steelers open up the playbook for him, but he should absolutely deliver some QB1 weeks with all the weapons at his disposal.
