According to Cameron Wolfe, Dolphins GM Chris Grier says “the door is shut on Deshaun Watson.” He says that is definitive and they believe in Tua Tagovailoa’s development going into Year 3.
For months now, dating back to the last offseason, the Dolphins have been rumored to have interest in Texans QB Deshaun Waston. The Texans have shown an unwillingness to trade the disgruntled QB despite being rumored to receive an offer from the Dolphins during the trade deadline during the 2021-2022 season that included multiple first-round draft picks. Dolphins GM Chris Greir on Wednesday confirmed the team is shutting the door on acquiring the standout QB and that the team believes in the development of Tua Tagovailoa.
In an update by Tom Pelissero, he reports that the Dolphins have brought on former Chargers offensive line coach and run game coordinator Frank Smith. Smith will serve as the new OC for Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins offense.
Smith has a history of helping develop good offensive lines, as well as tight ends. This spells good news for a Dolphins team that struggled to protect the QB last year. Mike Gesicki could be someone who benefits as well if he is brought back to Miami.
Per Adam Schefter, the Miami Dolphins are working on a deal to finalize 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel as their next head coach.
McDaniel has been on the 49ers staff since 2017 previously serving as run game coordinator, he was promoted to offensive coordinator prior to the 2021 season. The Dolphins will hire the offensive-minded 38 year-old to be the next face of their franchise. The 49ers have had a top-seven offense in two of the last three seasons with McDaniel as a top assistant. This greatly improves the outlook for Tua Tagovailoa as he will get an offensive guru ready to aid his development.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Friday that the current Dallas Cowboys Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore is set to interview with the Miami Dolphins on Saturday.
Moore will be the Dolphins second interview in two days, but nonetheless would be a pretty solid hire for an offense in need of change. Moore did wonders with Dak Prescott and that passing attack in Dallas, and the Dolphins would likely hope to recreate that with Tua Tagovailoa and Jaylen Waddle. News about who the Dolphins end up hiring should come out within the next week.
Current 49ers' Offensive Coordinator Mike McDaniel is set to have his interview with the Miami Dolphins on Friday, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
McDaniel was extremely successful this past season with the 49ers, and in turn is receiving plenty of interest around the league for head coaching positions. The Dolphins are likely hoping McDaniel can run a similar system with Tua Tagovailoa as he did with Jimmy Garoppolo, as they attempt to get their young QB's career back on track. News about who the Dolphins end up hiring should come out within the next week.
