Despite shining on film, Scooby Wright posts disappointing combine numbers

LB Scooby Wright was a unanimous All-American and Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, but many questioned his overall athleticism heading into the NFL combine. He confirmed those suspicions with a 4.90 40-yard dash time and a 9'5" broad jump. Wright lives off his killer instincts and awareness, but he will need to speed up and increase his intangibles to succeed in the NFL.

Fantasy Impact

Scooby Wright is hard to project as both a draft selection and an NFL player. I believe his instincts could allow him to play well at the next level, but a 4.9 40-yard dash could have significantly dropped him on draft boards. He will likely be a mid-round developmental inside backer for his new team.

Scouts hoping Scooby Wright flies under draft radar

In 2014, Arizona LB Scooby Wright took the nation by storm with 163 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 14 sacks and six forced fumbles. However, injuries plagued him throughout the 2015 season and he was only able to play three total games. Scouts praise him for his play awareness and instincts. His draft stock could hinge upon showing above-average athleticism and coverage skills. He wasn't often asked to cover at Arizona, but teams will want to see his raw talents.

Fantasy Impact

Scooby Wright is the epitome of a linebacker with elite play instincts. He plays the ball well and knows how to generate turnovers, but his aggressive tendencies can also lead to overrunning plays. One AFC East scout went on record saying "I hope he falls to us because I will do everything in my power to get him drafted. Make Zach Thomas your comp for him. They are the exact same guy." His current projection is round 3-4.
