Colorado Avalanche

west

Philipp Grubauer has a fantastic 2021 season and was a big reason why the Avalanche finished at the top of the league. He definitely saw more than anticipated ice time as the Avs backup goalie situation this season wasn't the best with Pavel Fancouz on LT-IR, Hunter Miska struggling, and making two trades for Jonas Johansson and Devin Dubnyk. Despite that we racked up 30 wins (one behind Andrei Vasilevskiy), seven shut-outs (tied with Semyon Varlamov), a .922 save percentage (top 8 for goalies with more than 20 starts), and a 1.95 GAA which was second best in the league behind Carolina's Alex Nedeljkovic. Look for him to be drafted as one of the top 5 goalies in 2022.

Mikko Rantanen was Colorado's top dog in scoring for the 2021 56-game season. He picked up the slack when the Avs needed him to and rewarded his fantasy managers with a solid 66 points. He also racked up a plus-30, 34 PIM, 24 powerplay points, 177 SOG, 26 hits and 20 blocks. Keep in mind when you're drafting next year that he doesn't produce very much in peripheral stats like hits and blocks which limits his upside in some leagues. Look for him to be drafted in the middle to late 2nd round next year.

Nathan Mackinnon racked up 20 goals and 65 points in the shortened 2021 season. Fantasy managers were probably expecting a little more production in the goals department, but he delivered fantasy results at more than a point-per-game and was a big contributor in powerplay points. Aside from his point totals he heads into the playoffs with a plus-22, 37 PIM, 25 powerplay points, 206 shots, 38 hits and 15 blocks. Look for him to be going in the top five next year.

Makar scores in win over L.A.

Sun, May 9th 12:32pm EDT
By Jeremy Farr

Cale Makar found the back of the net in Colorado's 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. He tallied a goal, an assist, a plus-2 rating, four shots and one hit.

Fantasy Impact: Makar's goal was a rocket one-timer from the point that made it through a bunch of bodies to tickle the twine. His assist on Devon Toews game-winner was even more impressive as the pass he made split three Kings defenders and sprung Toews in from the point for the 3-2 lead they would never relinquish. Makar is up to eight goals and 43 points this year.

Devon Toews found the back of the net two times in Saturdays 3-2 win over Los Angeles. He finished the game with two goals, a plus-2 rating, two shots and two blocks.

Fantasy Impact: Toews first goal was a nice move in the slot as the puck trickled into some open ice and he picked it up and fired it home over Calvin Pederson's glove. The second was from a seeing-eye pass sent over from Cale Makar that made it through three defenders and he promptly shot it home into the top left corner. He's currently tied his personal best in goals (9) and points (28) in a season with three games remaining on the schedule.

Alex Newhook tallied an assist in Colorado's 3-2 victory over the rival L.A. Kings on Friday. He finished the game with a point, and a plus-1 rating.

Fantasy Impact: Newhook was called up from the Colorado Eagles and played his first game on May 6th which ended up being a loss to the San Jose Sharks. He was drafted 16th overall in the 2019 draft and will help the Avalanche establish depth at the center position. Keep an eye on him next year as Colorado will more than likely be putting points on the board regularly.

Conor Timmins registered two assists in Colorado's 4-3 victory over the visiting San Jose Sharks on Saturday. He finished the game with two points, and a plus-3 rating.

Fantasy Impact: Timmins first assist was an excellent pass right onto the tape of Nathan Mackinnon who was planted on the doorstep. He could of had his eyes closed and redirected the pass in the net it was so crisp. His second was the secondary assist on Mikko Rantanen's game winner. Through 26 games with the Avalanche, the 32nd overall pick in 2017 has three assists, a plus-1 rating and six PIM. He's still young and developing but seeing more ice time.

Patrik Nemeth found the back of the net in Colorado's 4-3 win over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. He finished the game with a goal, a plus-1 rating and four shots.

Fantasy Impact: This is Nemeth's first goal since re-joining Colorado from Detroit. He doesn't carry much fantasy value unless you need to stream players for plus/minus, hits and blocks upside. He has one point, and a plus three rating with the Avalanche this year.

Andrew Burakovsky scored for the Avalanche helping them stave off the San Jose Sharks for their 33rd win of the season. He registered a goal, a plus-1 rating and three shots.

Fantasy Impact: This one came right off the draw. Puck was won by J.T. Compher, Burakovsky collected, skated into the circle and notched his 15th of the season. He's five goals off of his personal best of 20 in the 58 games that he played in 2020.

Devan Dubnyk was the winning goalie in Thursday's 4-2 road win over the St. Louis Blues. He stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced.

Fantasy Impact: The first goal wasn't his fault as St. Louis made a nice passing play while on the man advantage. Jaden Schwartz rifled it top corner. The second one was a little leaky as the puck slinked between his blocker and body which dribbled behind him into the net. There have been a couple of those this season but other than that he has looked solid between the pipes and the Avalanche have to be happy about picking him up right before their star goalie Philipp Grubauer went down due to Covid-19. Since the Avalanche have clinched it will be interesting to see who gets the nod on the 24th vs the same St. Louis team. He's sitting on a 5-9-0-2 record with a 3.10 GAA and .910 save percentage.

Brandon Saad found the back of the net on Thursday helping lift the Avalanche to a 4-2 road win over the St. Louis Blues. He put up a goal, a plus-1 rating, 2 PIMs and one shot.

Fantasy Impact: St. Louis was attempting to clear the zone and Tyson Jost knocked the puck down with his glove only to recover it in the corner. He found Saad hanging out in front of the net and received a nice backhand pass. Saad manufactured a single-deke in close which was enough to open up Jordan Binnington and give the Avs a lead they wouldn't relinquish. He's up to fifteen goals and 24 points this year. His veteran presence will surely help the Avalanche in the post season.

Five-game point streak for Jost

Fri, Apr 23rd 10:55am EDT
By Jeremy Farr

Tyson Jost tallied an assist in Colorado's 4-2 victory over the hosting St. Louis Blues on Thursday. He finished the game with a point, a plus-1 rating, a shot and one hit through 14:42 TOI.

Fantasy Impact: Jost made a nifty pick-off while the St. Louis defender attempted a saucer pass out of the zone. He batted the puck down and was able to find Brandon Saad lurking in front of the net and put it home. He now has five assists in his last five games (one each game) and has appeared to take a step forward this year. He doesn't provide much consistent fantasy value but can be used as a streaming option due the Colorado's scoring upside.

PPG for Avs captain on Monday

Tue, Apr 6th 2:21pm EDT
By Jeremy Farr

Gabriel Landeskog notched a power play goal in Colorado's 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Wild. He filled up the stat sheet with a goal, a plus-1 rating, two PIM, three shots, one hit and one block.

Fantasy Impact: Landeskog was posted up in front of the net while on the man advantage. The puck moved seamlessly from Mackinnon, to Rantanen to Landeskog's stick, and redirected in. It would end up being the game-winner. He has amassed 28 points since March 1st. He also provides value in the hits and blocks categories. Expect him to be very useful for fantasy managers the rest of the way.

Jonas Johansson was the winning goalie in Friday's 3-2 victory over the visiting St. Louis Blues. He stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced.

Fantasy Impact: Johansson would of liked to have the first goal back as he left a small gap open against the post and Mike Hoffman exploited it to make the score 1-1. He admitted after the game that it was a, "mistake" and shouldn't went in. He was steady after that and only allowed one more, which was enough for his first win since February 20th 2020. Hopefully this will help build his confidence up and he can be relied upon more frequently as the Avs backup goalie situation has been dire this year. Philipp Grubauer has been playing excellent hockey however.

Joonas Donskoi potted three goals a 9-3 rout of the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday. He netted three goals, an assist, a plus-4 rating and six shots.

Fantasy Impact: Donskoi was in the right place at the right time on Wednesday. Getting open and delivering on one timers. This included a tidy deke-and-tuck to the short post of Aaron Hill which he'd probably like back as Donskoi fooled him on the wrap around. Although he tallied the hat-trick in 3 minutes and 27 seconds, it isn't the quickest in franchise history. Alain Cote netted three goals vs the Boston Bruins in 2 minutes 17 seconds back on April 1st, 1982 for the Quebec Nordiques. Donskoi is producing points regularly and needs to be scooped up if he's available. He's up to 15 goals and 28 points this season.

Sam Girard nets one in 8-4 win

Wed, Mar 17th 11:25am EDT
By Jeremy Farr

Samuel Girard potted his fifth of the season in Tuesday's victory over the Anaheim Ducks. He tallied a goal, an assist, a plus-3 rating, three shots and a block.

Fantasy Impact: The goal was nothing fancy but helped separate the Avalanche at 6-4. He fired a shot on net from the corner and it found it's way over the goal line. He's up to five goals and 21 points so far this year and is looking like a fine signing by Joe Sakic.

Category: Game Recaps

Nazem Kadri filled up the stat sheet in Tuesday's 8-4 comeback win over the Ducks. He finished the game with two goals, two assists, a plus-3 rating, two penalty minutes, and six shots.

Fantasy Impact: Kadri was all over the score sheet in this game and came up with two game tying goals while the Ducks were up. His first was a slap shot that burned Miller over the glove side top shelf. His second was a very subtle tip in from an Andre Burakovsky shot. Kadri has six points in his last two games so make sure he's in your lineup. He's up to nine goals and 24 points this year.

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored on the open net in Colorado's 6-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes.

Fantasy Impact: Arizona coughed up the puck while trying to climb back from a 5-2 deficit. He took the puck and promptly shot it down ice into the empty cage. It's his first of the year. Bellemare isn't on the fantasy radar unless you need a desperation SHP.

Compher scores in losing effort

Thu, Feb 25th 4:35pm EST
By Jeremy Farr

J.T. Compher scored the Avs first goal in a 6-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday. He posted a goal, a minus-1 rating and four shots.

Fantasy Impact: Compher's goal came on a fast break out. Girard sent the puck up to Devon Toews who set him up in the middle for a shot that found the back of the net. It's his second of the season and he doesn't carry much fantasy relevance.

Logan O'Connor opened the scoring for Colorado in their 5-1 win over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday. He tallied a goal, a plus-1 rating, and two shots.

Fantasy Impact: O'Connor was called up due to Matt Calvert falling out of the lineup. He took a shot, which found it's way through multiple bodies, caught Kahkonen's stick awkwardly and went in. He has one goal in one game this year.
