Colorado Avalanche

Pavel Francouz backstopped the Avalanche to a 3-1 home victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday. He stopped 37 of the 38 shots he faced.

Fantasy Impact: Francouz was denied (for a second straight game) a shutout as the Devils scored late in the game (again). The goal was unfortunately deflected off Sam Girard's stick while trying to block a centering pass and redirected through his five hole. Other than that Francouz has looked excellent as the Avs' number two. He's very nimble in the crease and rocks the righty glove hand well. He's 9-2-0-1 this season with a .932 save percentage and 2.26 GAA. He's made the most of his opportunities while Grubauer was hurt and is making it look like they may be able to deploy both goalies effectively. He is definitely worth an add for spot starts and if you can find a roster spot for him in the short term, he's a good bet as a mainstay to see how this situation pans out.

Valeri Nichushkin potted the game-winning goal on Friday helping lift the Avalanche to a 3-1 victory over the visiting New Jersey Devils. He finished the game with one goal, a plus-1 rating, two shots and one hit.

Fantasy Impact: Nichushkin beat Domingue with a wrist shot on his off hand from the top of the circle. It looked like it should of been stopped but his follow through knocked the defenders stick and could of forced his eye off the puck for a second, which was more than enough for it to go past him low blocker side. Don't look now but Nichushkin has three goals and four points through his last five games and appears to be finding his stride with his new team. His career high in goals (14) came with the Dallas Stars back in his 2013 rookie campaign and he is on pace to beat that if he's able to keep the momentum. If you're in a pinch and have an empty position to fill, give the hulking forward a look for a pop-and-drop.

Gabriel Landeskog scored a goal in Colorado's 3-1 home win over the visiting New Jersey Devils on Friday night. He tallied a goal, an even rating, two penalty minutes, two shots, two hits and one block.

Fantasy Impact: His goal was assisted by Nathan Mackinnon who faked a shot and passed it to Landy, who instead, one-timed it past Louis Domingue to give the Avs the lead. Not to be over shadowed by the talent on his line, Landeskog is a great fantasy asset as he doesn't only get points, but demonstrates his grit as the team's captain by throwing the body around, blocking shots, and isn't afraid to put himself in a position where he might take a penalty. The PIM's may not be the best for the Avs as they need him on the ice, but fantasy owners will take it. He's up to six goals and ten points through 16 games played.

Nathan Mackinnon scored an empty net goal in Colorado's 3-1 home victory over the New Jersey Devils. He registered a goal, an assist, an even rating, five shots and one hit through 19:34 of TOI.

Fantasy Impact: Mackinnon's assist was a well set up fake-shot that he feathered over to Gabriel Landeskog and shot past the New Jersey netminder. His goal was in the empty net and brought him up to 20 goals and 50 points on the season. Fantasy owners are seeing solid returns from their first round investment and there's no reason to think he will slow down.

Ryan Graves opened up the scoring for the Avalanche in Thursday's 3-2 road win over the Montreal Canadiens. He registered a goal, a plus-1 rating, three shots, one hit and a team-high five blocks.

Fantasy Impact: Cale Makar drove the puck to the net from the Colorado zone and got the puck tangled up in front. Graves then came in for support and was able to stuff it through the mess for his fourth of the season. Graves won't be much of an asset in the goals/assists department but he has a very nice plus-18 on the season and loves tallying up the blocks and hits. Keep him on your watch list to stream when you need help in those categories.

Matt Calvert potted the GWG in Thursday's 3-2 road win over the Montreal Canadiens. He filled up the fantasy stat sheet in this one by providing a goal, one assist, a plus-1 rating, a team-high five shots and two hits through 13:19 of ice time.

Fantasy Impact: Calvert's goal came on the penalty kill when (much like the game against the Leafs in the previous game) the Canadiens got crossed up on their offensive zone's blue line and coughed up the puck to J.T Compher, who skated down the ice and sent the pass across to Calvert, and sent it home. He's up to five goals and 15 points in the 2019 season.

Philipp Grubauer was the winning goalie in Wednesday night's 3-1 road win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. He turned away 38 of the 39 shots he faced backstopping the Avalanche to four in a row.

Fantasy Impact: Grubauer came to play in this one, regularly denying the Leafs in the high-danger zone. He earned his first star in this performance and has now won three in a row. He has a very fine 10-5-2 record with a 2.75 GAA and .916 save percentage. Expect Pavel Francouz to be between the pipes vs. Montreal on Thursday.

Nikita Zadorov decided to take a page from Mark Boroweicki's play book and dish out a team-high six hits in Colorado's 3-1 road win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Fantasy Impact: Zadorov isn't know for putting up goals and assists but his production in the hits department from the rear guard is fantasy relevant. He regularly see's around 18 minutes TOI and can help fantasy managers if they value hits. With the Avs playing winning hockey, he won't snow you in plus/minus either, which is the usual downfall of a heavy hitting defenseman.

Joonas Donskoi scored the third goal in Wednesday's 3-1 road win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. He finished the game with one point, a plus-1 rating, four shots, two hits and one block.

Fantasy Impact: Matt Calvert was able to break up the play right off the face off while the Leafs were pressing late. Calvert could of easily shot it in from center but decided to send it to his line mate who was in better position. He's up to 12 goals and 23 points and is worth a roster spot if you have a spare position, while he's playing along side Nathan Mackinnon. He also carries dual wing eligibility which makes him a little more appealing.

Sam Girard provided two assists in Saturday's 7-3, home victory over the visiting Chicago Blackhawks. He finished the game with two points, a plus-2 rating, 5 PIM, one shot, two hits and one block.

Fantasy Impact: Girard had an excellent game as he stuffed the stat sheet across the board while being rewarded with two points along the way. He was signed to a seven year contract back in July and hasn't exactly been a points machine but does the things a good defenseman does. Great vision on the ice and is always accountable on the rear-guard. At this point he's not the best fantasy option based on his points and peripheral stats (hits, blocks) but he's worth keeping an eye on if he starts to turn it on.

Mikko Rantanen registered four points in Saturday's home victory over the visiting Chicago Blackhawks in the second game of a home and home. He tallied a goal and three assists, a plus-1 rating, two shots and one hit.

Fantasy Impact: Rantanen was the dish-man in this one as he was taking the puck from the opposition and finding his teammates almost immediately. The goal he scored was practically all him as he waltz'd into Chicago's zone and made some moves to open up the ice. Sam Girard took a shot and the rebound kicked out to Mikko who promptly put it home. He's up to six goals and 16 points through 10 games and the Avs are surely delighted to have him back after missing the last 16 games.

Nazem Kadri buried two goals in Saturday's 7-3 home win over the Chicago Blackhawks. He finished the game with two points, an eve rating, four shots and one block.

Fantasy Impact: Kadri got the first two of the game giving the Avs a lead that they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the game. Both his goals came with the help of his line mates as Rantanen dished him the puck while he was in the top of the crease. The second J.T Compher had Robin Lehner completely blinded with a screen and had no chance at stopping it. The effort brings him to ten goals and 20 points through 26 games and is making Joe Sakic look real good so far. He's worth a pick up if you need help at center due to his points upside and moxy in the face off circle.

Cale Makar found the back of the net for two goals in Thursday night's 3-2 road loss to the Minnesota Wild. He logged two goals, an even rating, a team-high five shots, one hit and two blocks.

Fantasy Impact: One of Makar's two goals came on the power play but both were hefty wrist shots that whizzed past Andrew Stalock. His first attempt on the first goal hit the post but (as usual) Mackinnon took control of the puck and fed it back to his go-to and rifled it top corner. His second was a jim-dandy toe drag into the high danger area and went bottom right (over a laid out defender). Makar looks like Mackinnon Lite out there right now and has been huge for the Avs while they're missing Gabriel Landeskog and Mikko Rantanen. Mackinnon regularly looks for him and the two have great chemistry. There's no reason to think his production is going to slow down so if you have him, congratulations. He's second only behind John Carlson with 25 points.

Andre Burakovsky scored a pair of goals on Tuesday night, lifting the Avalanche to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames. He finished the game with two points, a plus-1 rating, two shots and two blocks through 18:28 TOI.

Fantasy Impact: Burakovsky had the scope on tonight. Both his goals were ripped passed Calgary net minder David Rittich into the short-side shelf. The first was set up by Nathan Mackinnon who did all the work and sent a backhand pass over to Burakovsky who went up and over Rittich's shoulder. The second was bad angle shot on the short side that...went over Rittich's shoulder. He's looking great seeing all this ice-time with Mackinnon on the top line and is worthy of a roster spot while he's producing.

Antoine Bibeau was the winning tender on Saturday night, backstopping the Avalanche to a 5-4 OT victory. He stopped 28 of the 32 shots he faced.

Fantasy Impact: Bibeau looked sharp in this one and was rewarded with one in the win column. The third and fourth goals were fortunate for the Canucks as they were both on a Vancouver empty-net man advantage. The third, Matt Calvert was completely out of the play due to taking a shot off the head and bleeding on the ice. The fourth was a renegade puck bouncing around in the air that landed in Brock Boeser's lap which he put in. Regardless, 27 seconds into OT Nathan Mackinnon sent the Vancouver staff back home to Granville with a loss, giving Bibeau his first win.

Adam Werner posted a 40-save shut out in Winnipeg on Tuesday night, backstopping a 4-0 road victory for the Avalanche.

Fantasy Impact: With Phillip Grubauer on the mend and Pavel Francouz leaving the game early. The Avs looked to Werner for the start and did not disappoint. He made some nice saves during the game and his glove hand looked nimble. If Francouz is out for any time, they will be turning to Werner for starts.

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare went right to work against his former team by scoring on his first shift and lighting the lamp for the Avs in a 6-1 victory over the Golden Knights. He finished the game with a goal, two assists, a plus-3 rating, four shots and two blocks.

Fantasy Impact: Coach Bednar usually rolls out his top line on the first shift of the game but not in this one. Bellemare took a pass then made a nifty deke to the inside and got into shooting position. He wristed it passed Theo Fleury and scored the first of six on the evening. He's up to three goals and three assists on the season.

Tyson Jost records hat-trick

Mon, Oct 21st 6:40pm EDT
By Jeremy Farr

Tyson Jost was the first Avalanche player this season to get three in one game. He lifted the visiting team to a convincing 6-2 road win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. He finished the game with three points, a plus-2 rating, three shots and two hits.

Fantasy Impact: Jost's first goal came from Girard who was looking at J.T. Compher wound up for a one-timer, but sent it the other way and was put in the top shelf. The second was little wrister back up top, again. The third was a narrow 2 on 1 and was able to squeeze a low one in the cage. Jost, Wilson and Compher appear to be gelling right now and finding ways to be successful. If this continues, Jost may become a fantasy-useful C. He does carry a career 36.6% however and needs to show that this is his year after Colorado drafted him 10th overall in 2016.

Erik Johnson notched the opening goal of the game on Monday, which started an unanswered four-goal streak for the Avs which set them up for a 6-3 win on the road. Johnson finished the game with one goal, a plus-1 rating, three shots and two hits.

Fantasy Impact: Johnson was open on the point and took a pass from newly acquired Nazem Kadri. He let a low wrister go and beat Holtby through the five-hole. It was a muffin of a goal from the blue line but he, and the Avs will take it. He has one point through five games this year and won't do much for fantasy owners in the points department.

J.T. Compher and the Colorado Avalanche have avoided arbitration and agreed to terms on a four-year deal that will pay the winger $14 million. (Source: Elliotte Friedman on Twitter)

Fantasy Impact: Compher is coming off of a career-best season in what was his second "full" year in the NHL. He tallied 16 goals and 16 assists for 32 points in 66 games. Unfortunately, the 24-year-old has yet to crack the 70 game mark in his young career, having dealt with injuries - including a concussion - in the past. In spite of this, the Avalanche clearly still believe in his abilities by signing him to this deal. But from a fantasy perspective, there's better options out there.
