Trust or Bust: 10 Players for Week 5

Mike Evans is healthy and he’ll be facing a soft Jacksonville Jaguars defense in Week 5

The season has not started the way many envisioned for a handful of players, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t time for things to turn around. Week 5 presents some quality matchups for a few big names and now is as good of a time as any for a big fantasy day.

In order to find out who you should trust this weekend, we asked our featured experts to name one player that has struggled this year who should break out, and on the flip side, who’s primed to disappoint.

Q1. Give us one player who has consistently struggled this year that you trust to break out in week 5?

Mike Evans WR, TB at JAC
“Evans does have a 100 yard receiving game on his resume with 101 yards receiving in Week 3, but he’s coming off of a three reception, 32 yard receiving effort, and has a goose egg on his resume this year as well. Suffice to say, even after cutting him some slack for being injured and inactive Week 1, he’s been a colossal disappointment. However, this is the week he reminds everyone what an elite talent he demonstrated he was during his rookie season. The Jaguars don’t have a Josh Norman on their roster, and Jameis Winston has already shown a great deal of trust in his second-year wideout targeting him 28 times in the three games the two have played together. If Evans stays true to his target average this week, he’ll turn in a monster scoring effort.”
Josh Shepardson (Daily Fantasy Cafe)

“Mike Evans has joined the group of extremely disappointing high draft picks. It’s not just uneven play, he missed the first couple games with a hamstring injury. But, you have to play to get points! In his triumphant season debut, he drew three targets… and no catches. He bathed in a steady stream of 17 targets the following week against Houston, but couldn’t repeat a solid game with Josh Norman and the Panther defense holding him down. Luckily, Jacksonville is giving up over 278 passing yards per game. The matchup is platter ready for Evans to show the dominant form that made him an early round pick.”
Mike Wright (The Fantasy Footballers)

“Evans battled a hamstring injury early in the year, but has been targeted heavily the last few weeks by Jameis Winston. Vincent Jackson reaped the fantasy benefits in Week 4, but I think Evans is primed for his 2015 breakout in a plus matchup vs. a Jaguars defense that’s been generous to opposing offenses all season.”

Brandin Cooks WR, NO at PHI
“When fantasy owners drafted New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks in the third or fourth round this year, they were hoping for a better average than 5.3 fantasy points per game. He has not scored a touchdown yet this season nor has he recorded a 100-yard game. I think that changes this week. The Philadelphia Eagles allow the fourth most points to fantasy wide receivers. I foresee him having WR2 value this week and he has incredible upside in a favorable matchup.”

Colin Kaepernick QB, SF at NYG
“While Vegas does not have the implied team total very high (18.5 points) the Giants have allowed an average of 327 yards through the air and 19.5 fantasy points to opposing team’s QBs so far on the season. TJ Hernandez tweeted out a nice little stat the other day that went something like this “SF has attempted the 5th most red zone passes (24), but have just 1 TD so far on the season”. Clearly this has to regress to the mean and in a positive way. Look for a nice bounce back from Kaepernick this weekend, and if you are playing DFS, target him in a few of your GPP lineups.”

DeMarco Murray RB, PHI vs. NO
“DeMarco Murray has struggled with injury, opportunity, and ineffectiveness behind a suspect offensive line. But he’s now healthy and remains a talented player despite the early results this year. Plus, the Eagles offense finally showed some life in the second half of last week’s game and opened up as favorites against the Saints. He can be viewed as a borderline RB1 with upside if the Eagles are able to jump out to an early lead.”

Q2. On the flip side, name the player you feel is primed to be week 5’s biggest bust.

Amari Cooper WR, OAK vs. DEN
“Cooper’s turning in a brilliant rookie season tallying 24 receptions for 339 yards receiving and a pair of touchdown grabs. That said, the Broncos defense is loaded, namely in the secondary. Whether Cooper draws Chris Harris Jr. or Aqib Talib (or perhaps the duo switches on and off of him), he’ll be staring across the line of scrimmage at a top cover corner. If you have the likes of an Allen Hurns or Travis Benjamin lurking on your bench, I would advocate sitting Cooper for either of the two.”
Josh Shepardson (Daily Fantasy Cafe)

Andy Dalton QB, CIN vs. SEA
“Dalton is a guy that we have all become very comfortable starting on a weekly basis. Well, maybe uncomfortably, but starting none the less. How could you not, he’s a top producer at the position. But this week is a true test with a brutal matchup against Seattle. I’m not expecting another big week for the “Red Rocket” and have been advising players to look for other options. It’s not the easiest thing sitting down a scorching hot QB, but I can’t see a way he has a good fantasy day against the resurgent Legion of Boom.”
Mike Wright (The Fantasy Footballers)

Jeremy Hill RB, CIN vs. SEA
“While Cincy enters the game as three point favorites and are playing at home (usually love to target RBs in this scenario), Hill has been far too TD dependent this season. He saw more snaps than Giovani Bernard in week four, but lacks in the passing game. Seattle ranks fourth in adjusted fantasy points allowed to running backs and Hill’s timeshare and TD dependency makes him a bust for me in Week 5.”
Ryan Hodge (ProjectRoto)

Tyrod Taylor QB, BUF at TEN
“Taylor has been a late round/streaming quarterback gem for a better part of his 2015 campaign, but with a depleted run game and diminishing targets in the passing game, it’s getting harder and harder for the elusive Taylor to hoodwink opposing defenses. The Titan defense isn’t a daunting matchup, but this is a week on the road where Taylor could underwhelm.”
Rumford Johnny (Rummy & Ray Podcast)

Giovani Bernard RB, CIN vs. SEA
“Bernard is off to a nice start this season, but Jeremy Hill‘s presence all but ensures that Bernard’s current pace is unsustainable. Those now relying on him may be wise to ship him off sooner than later. A tough matchup with the Seahawks this weekend is sure to begin slicing into his perceived value.”
Kyle Wachtel (Footballguys)

DeMarco Murray RB, PHI vs. NO
“One player that I am amazed some people still have faith in this week is Philadelphia Eagles RB DeMarco Murray. The Saints have the perception of being a horrible defense, but they are 16th against fantasy running backs. That is not great, but fantasy backs have not been steamrolling them either. Murray is the 41st ranked running back and the only thing keeping him that high is two touchdowns. He averages 1.6 yards per carry and 6.9 yards per reception. I have given up on him this point and he is a RB4 with no upside. He is likely to bust again this week.”
