Fantasy Baseball: Top 5 Multi-Positional Players

Being multi-positional can be a huge factor in a player’s worth in fantasy baseball. Having a great player eligible at two different positions creates more options when starting and sitting other players. Some players may be multi-positional on one site and not another.

Manny Machado (BAL – 3B/SS)
Machado finished the 2015 season in the top five in every fantasy baseball statistic amongst third basemen, with the exception of OBP where he finished eighth. He was the only player in the league to hit 35 home runs and steal 20 bases. If he was shortstop-eligible, he would have led them in runs, home runs, RBI and walks.

Similar to other players on this list, Machado is only shortstop eligible on Yahoo, not ESPN. This year, Machado is being drafted in the late first or early second round. I would happily draft him at those spots on Yahoo, but would think twice on ESPN.

Chris Davis (BAL – 1B/OF/DH)
After signing a seven-year, $161 million dollar contract, Davis is set to stay in Baltimore for a while. Unlike Machado, this Oriole is credited with these positions on both Yahoo and ESPN. If you are playing with a DH slot, Davis is even more appealing.

He led the MLB in home runs last year with 43 while coming in second in RBI with 109. Davis is an especially good deal on Yahoo, where his current ADP is 40.9.

Kris Bryant (CHC – 3B/OF)
Bryant only has multi-positional eligibility on Yahoo. Bryant finished last season in the top three in home runs, RBI, walks, stolen bases, OBP and SLG among third basemen. Bryant, according to FantasyPros’ experts, is the fourth-ranked third basemen behind Josh Donaldson, Machado and Nolan Arenado. If projections are correct, Bryant will be supplying top tier numbers without the first round price.

Matt Carpenter (STL – 2B/3B)
Carpenter is yet another player who is only given multi-positional eligibility on certain fantasy baseball sites. On ESPN, he is only a third baseman. On Yahoo, you can start him at either second or third base.

Last year, Carpenter had numbers only below Dee Gordon and Jose Altuve. The only downfall to Carpenter is his lack of stolen bases.

Carpenter is a steal (no pun intended) in Yahoo, with an ADP of 57.9. In ESPN, I would not reach higher than 40.

Buster Posey (SF – C/1B)
We end this list with a player who has dual eligibility on both Yahoo and ESPN. On both sites, he is consistently drafted towards the end of the third round, which is where I currently have him in my rankings. However, with the catcher class so small, I may consider taking him late in the second round depending on who has already been drafted. I would draft Posey over guys like Sale, Arrieta, Bumgarner, Price, Betts, Marte and Votto.
