Brewers closer John Axford was able to pitch a scoreless ninth inning during Saturday's contest against the Twins. Axford retired all three batters he faced during his lone frame of work, including one by strikeout. He needed only 12 pitches to get through scoreless outing and is still 6 for 7 in save chances on the year.

Brewers closer John Axford's streak of 49 consecutive saves came to an end during Friday night's contest against the Cubs. Axford came on in the ninth inning and allowed three runs on two hits, including a RBI single off the bat of Alfonso Soriano. Axford was unable to finish out the inning as he was relieved by Tim Dillard.

Coming into a 0-0 ballgame, Axford allowed the Reds to score twice in the ninth to take a 2-0 lead. Axford gave up two runs on three hits and a walk over his inning and took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year. He struck out two and his ERA is now at 5.59.

Brewers closer John Axford entered Sunday's series finale against the Cardinals in the ninth inning with a one-run lead. He put the first two runners on before striking out David Freese. Then a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play allowed him to escape the jam and secure the 3-2 win. Axford collected his fifth save of the season while lowering his ERA to 4.70.

Brewers closer John Axford said Saturday morning that he expects talks to begin soon on a contract extension. His agent, Dan Horwitz, is in town and ready to resume negotiations with general manager Doug Melvin. Axford signed a one-year deal for $525,000 early in camp with the understanding that talks would resume at some point for a multi-year term.

“Axford is in a tough position this year. The Brewers are a bit weaker with no Prince Fielder. The bullpen has K-Rod ready to get his old closer spot, and Axford does not have as long of a leash as other closers. Axford proved to be valuable with the third best ERA from the closer spot, and his K rate also remains elite. With K-Rod in the bullpen, the Brewers will be more inclined to save Axford for save situations exclusively.”
