Fanatsy Impact: Jose Reyes’ Return

Jose Reyes returned for the Blue Jays early this week

Jose Reyes returned for the Blue Jays early this week

The Toronto Blue Jays have had an up-and-down start to the season. The Jays are 21-26, three and a half games back from the first-place Rays. But there is still hope for the Jays. They are in the AL East which has been close all season with each team struggling at different points throughout the year. One hope for the Jays is the return of Jose Reyes, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Monday.

Reyes had been sidelined since April 27 with a fractured left rib sustained on a check swing in the fourth game of the season. He’s batting .250 with no home runs and seven RBI. Reyes, who has .291 career AVG, With 111 home runs, and 575 RBI, should provide a lift for a struggling Blue Jays’ team that is seeking more consistency on offense. Reyes will also add another veteran bat to a lineup that has had to  deal with Jose Bautista’s shoulder injury of late. The best thing that the Jays have going to them is that they are in the AL East. Formerly one of the most competitive divisions in the game, the East is currently one of the weaker in baseball. Each team has its issues, keeping the race for first place in the division very tight.

On Monday, in Reyes’s first game back since April 27th, he went 3-for-4 with a double. Reyes also struck out in the game, and scored a run. Reyes’ bat was well received by his teammates, as he was able to come right back and make an impact. He then was part of a Jays’ lineup that scored 10 runs against the White Sox on Tuesday night.

With Reyes back the Jays will look to make up some lost ground. Reyes will be one to watch in the weeks to come, as a rib injury is a hard thing to come back from in baseball. Considering his injury history, no one would be surprised to see him re-injure his rib, especially considering the injury is one that is easily aggravated. If he can remain healthy, look for Reyes to make an impact in the coming weeks.
