Most Overrated Running Back (Fantasy Football)

Most Overrated Running Back (Fantasy Football)
Le'Veon Bell

Le’Veon Bell’s suspension essentially costs owners two roster spots entering the 2016 season

Several of our correspondents take a look at who they feel is the most overrated running back entering the 2016 fantasy football season.

Le’Veon Bell (PIT) (ADP: 10, RB5)
Bell is my most overrated running back heading into the 2016 season. Few running backs provide more risk when you evaluate his injury history and projected workload. It would also be wise to draft DeAngelo Williams (currently RB33 according to FantasyPros consensus ADP rankings) if you select Bell in the early rounds. The downside with this strategy is that you would have to monopolize two roster spots to make that happen which limits the upside of your roster. These are elements that need to be factored in when fantasy owners consider drafting Bell. He has produced 0.68 fantasy points per touch throughout his career.

Dion Lewis (NE) (ADP: 56, RB21)
The PPR darling from last season is a prime target for Zero RB drafts this season. Unfortunately, Lewis has had two major injuries to his left knee during his NFL career. Burst, lateral movement, and stop-start time could all be negatively affected in 2016. I’m already hesitant for a Bill Belichick running back. Now Tom Brady will miss four games. I’ll take Duke Johnson two rounds later for equal, if not better, production.

Thomas Rawls (SEA) (ADP: 31, RB13)
First, he’s recovering from an ankle injury. In addition, the Seahawks spent plenty of draft capital on the running back position. We know the culture of competition in Seattle, so Rawls is far from a sure thing. Finally, while the Seahawks will continue to run the ball, they have been/are slowly transitioning to more of a passing team. This is Russell Wilson‘s team now. There are 87.6 million reasons that say so.

Jamaal Charles (KC) (ADP: 16, RB8)
Ugh, I hate writing this because Charles is an awesome player, but there’s no way I can justify his expert consensus ranking (6th RB) or ADP (8th RB, 16th overall) in standard leagues. He’s 29 years old and coming off ACL surgery, the second one he has had in his career. Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West looked fine replacing him, and I could see either one of them getting goal line work this year as the Chiefs look to keep Charles healthy. I’d love to have him on my team, but I can’t risk the early second round pick on him that he’s currently going for.
