FanDuel PGA Preview: BMW Championship

FanDuel PGA Preview: BMW Championship

There are nine golfers priced at $11,000 or above on FanDuel this week for the second FedEx Cup playoff event. Brooks Koepka ($12,200), Rory McIlroy ($12,100), and Dustin Johnson ($12,000) are the 12k golfers. Jon Rahm ($11,800) and Justin Thomas ($11,500) round out the top five highest-priced golfers. FanDuel provides you with $60,000 to select six golfers for an average roster spot of $10,000.

All of the tips and information that I mention in this article are plays that I will be considering for my own lineups. However, that doesn’t mean that I will end up with all of the guys that I mention. This article is written early in the week and additional news, research, and roster construction could lead me to different plays. Use all the information available to you to make the best decision possible for your lineup. There are going to be very few “bad” plays this week (or next). Go with the golfers you feel most comfortable with. Good luck and, most importantly, have fun! Whether you win or lose, golf is one of the most entertaining fantasy sports to follow because you get four days of action.

The second of three FedEx Cup playoff events comes to Chicago this week as the Medinah Country Club will host the BMW Championship. Medinah No. 3 is a par 72 course measuring 7,613 yards. The greens are bent grass and the fairways are wide. Length off the tee should be important this week. Medinah has played host to only three professional events in the last 20 years (2012 Ryder Cup, 2006 PGA Championship, and 1999 PGA Championship). Tiger Woods won the last two majors held at Medinah (1999 and 2006 PGA Championships).

The top-70 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings will tee it up this week in this no-cut event. At the conclusion of this event’s four rounds, the top-30 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings will advance to the TOUR Championship next week at East Lake in Atlanta. Just like last week, the FedEx Cup points are quadruple that of a regular-season event, so the stakes are high this week.

FAVORITE TOP-TIER PLAYS

Rory McIlroy ($12,100)
He has 13 top-10 finishes in his 16 worldwide events in 2019. In his last six no-cut events, he has five top-10 finishes. In the last 24 rounds played, he is first in fantasy scoring and third in total shots gained.

Jon Rahm ($11,800)
He was my favorite play last week and nearly won. This week is no different. As good as Rory’s form, Rahm might be playing even better as he has finishes of 3rd, 7th, T11, win, T2, and T3 in his last six events. This could be similar to 2017 when he finished in the top 10 in all four playoff events.

Jordan Spieth ($10,600)
Admittedly, he hasn’t had a Jordan Spieth-like year, but he has started playing better this summer. In his last nine events, he has four top-10 finishes, including a T6 last week at the Northern Trust. In those 36 rounds of golf, he is ranked 11th in fantasy scoring. When looking at playoff events from 2017-2019, he has five top-five finishes in those nine events. Only Justin Rose has more. He also finished T12 in his last no-cut event.

FAVORITE MID-TIER PLAYS

Ian Poulter ($9,300)
He is someone that intrigues me this week because he has finished eighth and T3 at the last two no-cut stroke-play events he has played in. Additionally, he went 4-0-0 for Europe as they came back from a 10-6 deficit at the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah. This past week, he finished T10 at the Northern Trust.

Joaquin Niemann ($8,700)
His T30 at the Northern Trust snuck him into the top 70 of the FedEx Cup standings to qualify for the BMW. He has made the cut in nine of his last 10 events. During that stretch, he has four top-15 finishes, including back-to-back top five’s in June. In the last 24 rounds, he is fifth in this field in fantasy scoring.

Andrew Putnam ($8,600)
He has made the cut in nine straight events worldwide. During that stretch, he has had four top-25 finishes, including his T12 at last week’s Northern Trust. Though it was at a different course, he finished T16 at last year’s BMW. In the last 24 rounds, he is 16th in fantasy scoring among the players in this field.

Rory Sabbatini ($8,200)
He just barely missed having his 11th top-20 finish on the season with a T21 last week at the Northern Trust. In the last 24 rounds played, he is 14th in fantasy scoring but is only the 29th most-expensive golfer this week.

FAVORITE LOW-TIER PLAYS

Corey Conners ($7,700)
He is in good form right now with three straight top-30 finishes, including a T21 this past week at the Northern Trust. The Valero Open champion also had a T27 in the last no-cut event on tour last month in Memphis.

Troy Merritt ($7,300)
He led the Northern Trust after an opening-round 62. He would finish T12 but it was only his third made cut in the last six events. However, the other two cuts resulted in a T7 and a runner-up finish. He doesn’t have to worry about the cut this week. For DFS purposes, he tends to score better than his finishing position. He is ninth on the PGA Tour in birdie or better percentage.

Vaughn Taylor ($7,200)
His T30 at the Northern Trust gave him his ninth straight made cut. He has seven top-20 finishes in the 2019 calendar year. He has a fourth and a sixth-place finish this summer demonstrating that he can also get hot and finish high on the leader board.
