FanDuel NHL DFS Strategy Advice: Tuesday (3/9)

Following jam-packed action across the league this weekend, Tuesday presents a nine-game slate that includes a few one-sided matchups that are sure to provide great value. As the eighth week of the season gets underway, teams like the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders find themselves surging up their respective divisions’ ranks. Meanwhile, teams like Pittsburgh scored nine goals across two games in an offensive explosion to swing their momentum via savvy puck play, as struggling players like Evgeni Malkin broke out of slumps to flash their brilliance. Let’s check out some players to add to your lineups either due for a big night or undervalued ahead of Tuesday’s games.

Center

Yanni Gourde (TB): $4,300 @ DET
The Lightning have been on fire this entire season, but Gourde has made his presence felt more recently, racking up six points (three goals, three assists) across his last four games played. The 29-year old centers the second-line for Tampa Bay in addition to the second power-play unit, averaging just over 17 minutes on ice while skating alongside legendary RW Steven Stamkos. The Lightning will play the Detroit Red Wings in a one-sided contest that is sure to provide plenty of opportunities for Gourde to continue his point streak, as he is riding momentum off the four-point game that fueled their comeback win against Chicago on Sunday. Tampa Bay will face one of the worst goaltending units in the league, as projected Detroit G Jonathan Bernier has allowed an atrocious 4.82 GAA with a .862 save percentage across his last two starts. Gourde is too juicy to pass on at this price against a lower-tier opponent like the Red Wings.

Wing

Jakub Vrana (WSH): $4,600 vs. NJ
Good players always find a way to generate points despite being held to limited opportunities, which is exactly what Washington Capitals LW Jakub Vrana did against the Flyers on Sunday. Vrana totaled just one shot on goal but racked up an assist despite the low-volume shooting night and now faces struggling New Jersey Devils goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood on Tuesday, presenting a favorable matchup for fantasy managers to take advantage of at such a low price. In his last two games against the Devils at the end of February, Vrana generated three points (two goals and an assist) and will be afforded every opportunity to put up similar numbers skating alongside star forward Alex Ovechkin and defenseman John Carlson on the Capitals’ top power-play unit.

Joel Farabee (PHI): $5,500 vs. BUF
As long as Joel Farabee gets shots on goal, he is likely to end up registering points. Skating on the Flyers’ first-line and their top power-play unit, Farabee has averaged over 18 minutes of ice time across his last week of action while netting three goals in his last three games played. The 21-year old winger gets an easy matchup against a spiraling Buffalo team that is already considered done for the year at the half-way point of the season. Sabres goaltender Carter Hutton has posted a very bad 3.40 GAA with a sub .900 (.883) save percentage that should have Farabee and the rest of the Flyers first-line chomping at the bit. Slightly more expensive than a typical value play, Farabee warrants rostering when he faces off against the Sabres and their struggling netminder on Tuesday night.

Defense

Nick Leddy (NYI): $4,300 vs. BOS
The New York Islanders find themselves on a five-game winning streak atop the East Division heading into a tough matchup against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday. Islanders D Nick Leddy skates on the second defensive unit, but his involvement on the second power-play unit is what gives him the floor fantasy managers seek in their lineups. Leddy averages just over 21 minutes on ice and has racked up assists (15) on limited shooting volume, generating just a single shot in each of his last four games played. His price tag reflects his lack of goals (1) this season. Still, the ability to get assists will prove extremely valuable in lineups, as the 29-year old managed two assists against Boston in their last outing at the end of February. Although Leddy is not the most attractive pick on defense for Tuesday’s slate, his cheap salary will allow you to invest in other high-caliber offensive players without being forced to take a risk rolling out a cheap, low-floor player in your lineup.

Goalie

Carter Hart (PHI): $7,800 vs. BUF
Hart, the young 22-year old goaltender for the Philadelphia Flyers, has just two wins across his last six starts but gets a great opportunity to rebound against an awful Buffalo Sabres squad at home on Tuesday. Hart logged a shut-out win against Buffalo just over a week ago and will have every chance to repeat that effort, adding immense value to those who opt to start him in fantasy lineups. With points being awarded to the winning team’s goalie (12) and additional points (8) that accrue from the rare shutout performance, Hart’s .893 GAA this season should be ignored based on the matchup. Hart has shown his ability to play at an elite level and is relatively affordable as far as goalies are concerned. Undergoing a grueling two-game gauntlet against the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals, Hart’s statistics dropped and subsequently dropped his price, creating great value amongst Tuesday’s projected goaltenders. Investing in Hart will allow you to preserve your budget for marquee players like Patrick Kane and Jonathan Huberdeau without sacrificing points on overhyped goaltenders in tougher matchups.
