Mitch Trubisky is getting a chance to revive his career. After a failed four-year stint in Chicago, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 draft took a year to reset his career with the Buffalo Bills. Trubisky primarily held the clipboard in Buffalo, where he served as Josh Allen‘s backup.
Trubisky signed a two-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason. Unless Pittsburgh spends the 20th overall pick on a quarterback, Trubisky will enter training camp as the team’s starting quarterback.
Trubisky’s biggest problem in Chicago was his ability to read the field from within the pocket. He was nicknamed “One-Read Mitch” for that very reason. But, of course, it didn’t help that coach Matt Nagy tried to fit a square peg in a round hole. Rather than working with Trubisky’s greatest strength, his mobility, Nagy ran an offense predicated on making correct reads from the pocket.

Trubisky enters 2022 as a QB2 or streaming option in dynasty leagues. The question is whether he can become anything more than that.
Current Situation
Trubisky will have a collection of pass-catchers that’s far better than anything he had to work with in Chicago. Diontae Johnson is one of the best receivers in the game at getting open and something Trubisky will undoubtedly need. Chase Claypool is coming off a down season but is still a downfield game-breaker. Tight end Pat Freiermuth is coming off a great rookie season and should serve as a strong midfield and red zone target. He’ll also have Najee Harris as an excellent check-down option in the passing game.
However, Pittsburgh’s offensive line is still a major question mark. After being one of the steadiest units in the league, Pittsburgh’s line eroded in 2021, which led to a disaster with Ben Roethlisberger under center. They added guard James Daniels and tackle Chukwuma Okorafor to slot in on the right side, but neither is a proven commodity.
The other question is what offensive coordinator Matt Canada will do with Trubisky running his offense. Will the offense feature designed rollouts that move the pocket and let Trubisky throw to one side of the field? That’s what I’m most curious to see as the Steelers segue out of the Roethlisberger era.
General Prediction for 2022 and Rest of Career
There’s a chance Trubisky makes the most of the best situation of his career and becomes a solid starting quarterback again. But unless he wows in 2022, he feels like a bridge option for Pittsburgh. It’s a smart flyer for the team to take as they sort out their long-term plans. But it wouldn’t surprise me if Pittsburgh drafted a rookie in the first round, thus crushing Trubisky’s long-term outlook.
Trubisky is a hold for now until we get clarification from the draft. However, if the Steelers don’t take a passer early in the draft, then Trubisky is a decent buy in SuperFlex leagues.
