Fantasy Baseball FAAB Waiver Wire Report: Wilmer Flores, Griffin Canning, Kevin Ginkel

Fantasy Baseball FAAB Waiver Wire Report: Wilmer Flores, Griffin Canning, Kevin Ginkel

We have made it through another week of action, and there continue to be endless injuries we need to account for on our rosters. Unfortunately, there have also been a lot of solid and slow starts from players that leave us wondering what to do with those roster spots.

Each week I will highlight a few players to target in your weekly FAAB process, but know there are many others available and, more importantly, others that may be better fitting for your teams. If you have any questions, please ask me on Twitter (@bdentrek).

Remember that we’ll be using Yahoo for player percentages, and we’ll keep our suggestion to players rostered in no more than 60% of leagues.

Fantasy Baseball FAAB Waiver Wire Report

Hitters

Triston Casas (1B – BOS)

Rostered: 51%
Suggested Bid: 22%

Casas has significantly been improving at the plate throughout the season, and since July 7, he has been on an absolute tear. Since the 7th, he has been hitting .455 with seven home runs, 15 runs, and 13 RBI. He’s walking over 15% of the time while striking out less than 20%. Casas’ quality of contact is through the roof, with a barrel rate of over 23% and a hard-hit rate of over 45%. Casas is becoming the player many thought he would be, and he could be a game-changer for a fantasy team for the rest of the season.

Edouard Julien (2B – MIN)

Rostered: 50%
Suggested Bid: 17%

After a rough first time in the bigs, Julien returned with Jorge Polanco‘s recent injury and has flourished. Entering Friday, Julien was hitting .393 in July with six home runs with one stolen base. He has been hitting near the top of the order and has scored 14 runs while walking 13.8% of the time. He has a ridiculous 30.8% barrel rate and a 48.7% hard-hit rate. Julien is so locked in that he can’t sustain this production, but he can still provide quality, five-category output for the rest of the season.

Wilmer Flores (1B,2B,3B – SF)

Rostered: 40%
Suggested Bid: 7%

Flores returned from the IL on June 29 and has been flourishing. He was hitting .368 with six doubles and six home runs entering Friday. Flores has added 12 runs and nine RBI while striking out less than 14% of the time. Flores is taking advantage of everyday playing time with Thairo Estrada out with an injury. Flores, with his multi-position eligibility, can be a great fantasy asset for the foreseeable future.

Pitchers

Yusei Kikuchi (SP – TOR)

Rostered: 53%
Suggested Bid: 6%

Kikuchi is quietly having a solid season with a 3.79 ERA, 4.00 xFIP, and 18.1% K-BB. He has been outstanding over his last three starts, allowing two earned runs over 16 innings while striking out 20. Kikuchi faces the Orioles next week and then has a nice two-step versus the Guardians and Cubs, making Kikuchi a strong fantasy option.

Michael Lorenzen (SP – DET)

Rostered: 51%
Suggested Bid: 6%

Lorenzen has been surprisingly good this season with a 3.58 ERA and 4.22 xFIP. Over his four July starts, Lorenzen has been outstanding. He has allowed three earned runs over 23.2 innings with 21 strikeouts. The matchups have been excellent, but Lorenzen has been getting it done, and that’s all that matters. He could be traded in the coming days, but if he isn’t, he has some great matchups versus the Pirates, Twins, and Red Sox.

Griffin Canning (SP – LAA)

Rostered: 29%
Suggested Bid: 5%

Canning has been finding a new level on the mound of late. Sure, he has allowed a few bad starts here and there, but overall, Canning has been a fantasy asset. Over his last six starts, he has allowed two earned runs or less in four starts while striking out seven or more in four. Canning faces the Braves and Mariners next week, which may be challenging, but he should be able to rack up the strikeouts if he can limit the damage.

Closers

Adbert Alzolay (RP – CHC)

Rostered: 55%
Suggested Bid: 11%

Alzolay has taken over the closer’s role for the Cubs and has been outstanding. Since July 5, Alzolay has pitched in nine games, pitching 8.2 innings and collecting seven saves. Alzolay has allowed two runs but has also struck out 11 with a nice 16.5% SwStr. The Cubs are playing good ball right now, giving Alzolay plenty of save opportunities, and he’s flourishing.

Kevin Ginkel (RP – ARI)

Rostered: 27%
Suggested Bid: 6%

The DBacks have been going through closers all season, and now it’s Ginkel’s turn. He has collected a save in three of his last four appearances. On the season, Ginkel has a 2.31 ERA and 3.63 xFIP, and a 15.2% K-BB. Ginkel has been effective out of the bullpen this year, and his past saving experience gives him an extra boost of confidence for fantasy managers.
