Trey Lance to start 49ers preseason opener Sunday
San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance will start the team’s preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, head coach Kyle Shanahan told KNBR
Fantasy Impact
Shanahan said that the expectation is for Lance to play most of the first half for the 49ers. This is a sign that he may be viewed as the favorite over QB Sam Darnold in the 49ers’ QB rotation. Brock Purdy, recovering from injury, was cleared for camp a couple of weeks ago, but the 49ers will likely hold him out of preseason action to preserve him to play as early in the regular season as he can. Lance has gotten very few opportunities to perform in real games for the 49ers, and preseason action will be crucial for his chances to return to good favor and see the field in 2023 for the 49ers.

Tony Pollard: Cowboys ‘to be careful not to overwork’ their RB
According to Dan Graziano of ESPN.com, the Cowboys are still going to limit Tony Pollard‘s touches despite the departure of Ezekiel Elliott. Graziano wrote in the article he is “not sure you should expect any more production from him this year than he gave you last year.”
Fantasy Impact
Pollard’s serious injury, a broken leg and high ankle sprain, suffered in the Cowboy’s January playoff run is still on the team’s radar. While all signs point to Pollard being the team’s surefire starter in 2023, the elevated touches many believed he was in store for may be limited in the interest of the fifth-year backs health. This report is slightly concerning given the obvious correlation between fantasy points and touches; however, Pollard is a high-efficiency back coming off a season where he managed 5.2 YPC and 6.7 Yards-Per-Target. One big difference with Elliott out of the picture that should still benefit Pollard is the goalline work that Elliott earned. Zeke’s 12 TDs from 2022 are no off the roster, and Pollard’s safe floor and high upside make him an excellent candidate to finish as an RB1 in 2023, across all formats.

Kenneth Gainwell receiving majority of first team reps
Kenneth Gainwell has been receiving the majority of first-team reps during training camp. He has nearly double the amount of carries as the next closest back.
Fantasy Impact
Gainwell has been efficient with his touches through two years of his career. He may not be as talented as a runner as Rashaad Penny or as a pass catcher as De’Andre Swift, but his all-around skillset is was makes him special. Time will tell if he becomes the Eagles’ RB1 in a crowded backfield, but he’s still a value in drafts even if he does not receive a workhorse workload given his low cost.
