Cooper Kupp Signs With the Seattle Seahawks: Fantasy Football Advice (2025)
Kupp, 32 in June, comes from Yakima, Washington, and starred at Eastern Washington University before being drafted in the third round by the Los Angeles Rams in 2017.
He achieved a historic 2021 season, leading the NFL in receptions (145), receiving yards (1,947) and touchdowns (16), culminating in a Super Bowl MVP performance and Triple Crown award.
However, injuries have limited his availability over the past three seasons, including an ankle injury that restricted him to 12 games in 2024. The former Rams receiver has missed an average of six games yearly since 2022.
Cooper Kupp’s Value
Kupp was featured in my “Players We Are Never Drafting Again” video before the 2024 season and that take ended up aging well (unlike Kupp’s production).
Injuries don’t get easier as guys get older, and Kupp fell even further off the grid last season.
In his last seven games with Los Angeles during the 2024 season, Kupp recorded more than three catches twice.
He totaled an anemic 18 catches for 251 yards and just one touchdown over that span, averaging 2.5 catches and 36 receiving yards per game.
It’s beyond telling that the Rams opted to spend the money on 32-year-old Davante Adams in free agency and just flat-out released Kupp for nothing after failing to find a trade partner.
I wouldn’t be too optimistic about him reversing his downward spiral in a brand-new Seattle offense led by Sam Darnold. While it’s an improvement for Darnold to have another pass-catcher to throw to, Kupp, at this stage in his career, won’t elevate the new Seahawks quarterback outside the mid-range fantasy QB2 range.
Kupp also can’t help Darnold if he misses more games.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s Value
Understandably, Kupp’s arrival addresses a significant need in the Seattle Seahawk’s receiving corps, following the departures of DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.
He joins a unit featuring Jaxon Smith-Njigba and recent signee Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
But in an offense that projects to be run-heavy behind new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, I am extremely bearish on Kupp’s fantasy upside in 2025.
The Kubiak offense wants to run the football and play strong defense.
Smith-Njigba established himself as the No. 1 in Seattle’s offense in 2024. Exchanging the target competition of Lockett/Metcalf for Kupp/Valdes-Scantling should not be looked at as a downgrade.
Smith-Njigba is and will be the No. 1 WR on the Seahawks in 2025. Buy any dip on his average draft position (ADP) caused by the Kupp signing.
I firmly believe Kupp’s best days as a fantasy asset are behind him. This signing is more about $15 million per year and a homecoming for Kupp than a chase for production.
The only way I could see Kupp being a deterrent is if he captures the entire slot role in Seattle’s offense.
But even in that scenario, Smith-Njigba would likely be fine, as he is more than capable of playing on the outside. Kupp? Probably not so much.
