Tuesday’s Starting Pitcher Rankings

Jacob deGrom (TEX) at NYY

Jacob deGrom has a challenging matchup tonight. According to FanGraphs, the Yankees are first in wRC+ (129) with a 22.4 K% versus righties and tied for second in wRC+ (131) with a 20.6 K% at home in 2025.

Fortunately, deGrom is talented enough to tie up even a supremely talented lineup. In nine starts spanning 51 innings this season, deGrom has the following stats.

  • 2.29 ERA
  • 2.84 xERA
  • 3.29 xFIP
  • 3.23 SIERA
  • 0.98 WHIP
  • Four wins
  • Three quality starts
  • 5.5 BB%
  • 26.6 K%
  • 14.7 SwStr%
  • 30.7 CSW%
  • 107 stuff+
  • 116 location+
  • 126 pitching+

The veteran righty is spinning it this year, and while the Rangers are -105, the game’s total is a pitcher-friendly 7.5 runs.

AJ Smith-Shawver (ATL) at WAS

AJ Smith-Shawver’s statistics are all over the place. On the negative side, his 4.90 xERA, 4.00 SIERA, 10.6 BB%, 97 stuff+, 94 location+ and 93 pitching+ in seven starts lasting 38.2 innings this year leave much to be desired. On the positive side, Smith-Shawver also has a 2.33 ERA, 3.74 xFIP, 24.8 K%, 12.4 SwStr% and 29.1 CSW%. So, he strikes out batters at a DFS-friendly clip with stellar plate discipline numbers, and his xFIP is adequate.

The young righty has a mid-pack matchup and favorable betting info tonight. The Nationals are tied for 18th in wRC+ (100) with a 20.8 K% versus righties and tied for 16th in wRC+ (106) with a 22.5 K% at home this year. Thus, the Braves are -162, and the game’s total is 8.5 runs.

JP Sears (ATH) vs. LAA

This game’s total of 10.5 runs is slightly alarming for JP Sears. Still, the Athletics are -160, Sears is a decent pitcher and the Angels are hot garbage.

In nine starts spanning 49 innings this season, Sears has a 3.31 ERA, 3.61 xERA, 4.44 xFIP, 4.20 SIERA and 1.10 WHIP. The lefty’s xFIP and SIERA aren’t optimal, but his ERA and xERA aren’t too shabby.

Again, Sears has a mouthwatering matchup. The Angels are 29th in wRC+ (58) with a 28.1 K% versus lefties and tied for 15th in wRC+ (92) with a 26.5 K% on the road this season. Despite the game’s terrifying total, Sears’ matchup is too tantalizing to ignore.

Suggested Lineup Stacks

Jack Kochanowicz is a pitch-to-contact hurler with a mediocre walk rate. In nine starts this year, he has a 4.71 ERA, 4.58 xERA, 4.96 xFIP, 5.10 SIERA, 1.47 WHIP, 10.4 BB% and 13.7 K%. His approach hasn’t yielded favorable results, and the Athletics have the firepower to punish him in their hitter-friendly temporary home.

  • Home (Coors Field)
  • Game Total/Moneyline: 11.5 Runs/COL +195

The Rockies are underdogs at home, and their lineup has many underwhelming hitters. Still, Coors Field is a dreamy venue for offense, and Taijuan Walker is a pitcher to get excited about stacking against. Walker’s 2.54 ERA in six starts is a fluke compared to his 4.72 xFIP. Colorado can expose Walker’s fraudulent ERA tonight.

Core Studs

  • Jordan Beck has eight homers, 25 runs, 16 RBIs, five stolen bases, a .319 OBP, .292 ISO, .368 wOBA and 121 wRC+ in 144 plate appearances this season.
  • Tyler Soderstrom has 10 homers, 28 runs, 30 RBIs, two stolen bases, a .329 OBP, .212 ISO, .352 wOBA, .379 xwOBA and 130 wRC+ in 207 plate appearances this season.
