Fantasy Football Burning Questions

Can Joe Flacco Save the Bengals?

The Bengals had been outscored 113 to 37, a -76 point differential, by their opponents in three games without Joe Burrow. They finally made a change under center by trading for Joe Flacco, who has already been named the starter against Green Bay. Flacco was benched in Week 5 by Cleveland, and although he hasn’t been great, he ranked dead last among signal callers in expected points added (EPA) per play (-0.33). The move at least keeps Cincinnati in the playoff mix until Burrow returns.

Even with their three-game skid, the Bengals are still in second in the division, trailing only Pittsburgh (3-1) in a wide-open AFC North. As bad as Flacco has been, it’s hard not to call him an upgrade for an offense that is currently 31st in DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average) with a mark of -28.3% and 32nd in total EPA (-64.48), averaging a league-low 228.6 yards per game.

Who Plays Quarterback for the Ravens?

The Ravens looked horrific in their first game without Lamar Jackson, getting decimated 44-10 against Houston at home, falling to 1-4 on the season. Although Cooper Rush wasn’t the only problem, he struggled in his starting debut, completing 14 passes on 20 dropbacks (70% completion rate) for 179 scoreless yards and three interceptions, finishing with a 58.1 passer rating and 29.4 quarterback rating.

Although he hasn’t officially been ruled out, Jackson will likely miss one more week, listed with a did not practice (DNP) designation on Wednesday. That leaves either Rush or Tyler Huntley as the starter for Week 6 in what’s bordering on must-win territory for Baltimore. Until Jackson returns, it’s hard to trust anyone on the offense, including Derrick Henry, who salvaged his day with a touchdown last week. However, he hasn’t looked the same since the season opener, averaging 12.3 touches on 12.8 opportunities for 42.8 yards over his last three games.

Hassan Haskins or Kimani Vidal? Or Neither?

The Chargers’ offense hasn’t looked great these past two weeks, dropping back-to-back games, and now missing Omarion Hampton for at least the next month after landing on the injured reserve (IR) list with an ankle injury. They were already missing their No. 2 running back, Najee Harris, who is out for the season with a torn Achilles, leaving Hassan Haskins and Kimani Vidal with a significant void to fill for the next four games, if not longer.

Haskins was already seeing work before Hampton left Week 5’s contest; however, Vidal was the much more efficient back after checking in the fourth quarter, rushing four times for 18 yards (4.5 yards per carry). There’s no telling how the backfield will shake out, but the most likely scenario looks like a split with a chance that neither back is viable for fantasy. The Chargers could also make a trade or sign a back in free agency (Gus Edwards?) to keep the run game afloat until Hampton returns.
