Fantasy Baseball 10 Burning Questions
1. Is Grant Taylor the closer for the White Sox?
Grant Taylor has been absolutely dominant this season, putting up a 1.78 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP with a 36.2% strikeout rate and a 7.6% walk rate in 25.1 innings.
Taylor converted the most recent save for the White Sox, even though Seranthony Dominguez didn’t pitch the previous night. There’s a chance Taylor will get more saves moving forward, so he’s worth a speculative add.
2. What should you do with Eury Perez?
Eury Perez has been one of the biggest disappointments this season, putting up a 5.33 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP with a 25.2% strikeout rate and a 12.2% walk rate in 52.1 innings.
But Perez still ranks third in stuff+, behind only Jacob Misiorowski and Cristopher Sanchez. I’d look to buy low on Perez. Once he finds his command and gets in a rhythm, the results could be quite good.
3. How good is Travis Bazzana?
Travis Bazzana is living up to the hype for the Guardians so far, slashing .304/.429/.406 with two home runs and seven stolen bases in 84 plate appearances.
You have to like the plate discipline metrics: 15.5% walk rate with a 15.5% strikeout rate. Bazzana is a polished hitter proving he belongs in the Majors.
4. Is Carson Benge back on track?
Carson Benge is showing you why he was a highly touted prospect. So far in May, the Mets outfielder is slashing .362/.413/.478 with one home run in 75 plate appearances.
Congratulations if you were able to scoop Benge up off the waiver wire. It’s wheels up from now on.
5. Has Roki Sasaki found a rhythm?
Roki Sasaki is showing us why he was so highly touted, coming off a dominant outing against the Angels in which he allowed one earned run over seven innings and struck out eight.
Sasaki has found his command, issuing one walk or fewer in three of his last four starts. There could be something here.
6. What should we do with Aaron Nola?
Aaron Nola has been awful this season, putting up a 6.04 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP with a 22.8% strikeout rate and an 8% walk rate in 50.2 innings.
However, Nola’s 3.90 SIERA indicates he deserves better results. I’m not ready to give up just yet.
7. Is it time to drop Reid Detmers?
Reid Detmers has been one of the unluckiest pitchers in baseball so far, as his 3.64 SIERA is much lower than his 5.07 ERA.
Playing for the Angels, there’s going to be limited opportunities for wins, but he’s still worth rostering in deeper formats. I’d pick Detmers up if he were dropped after getting rocked by the Athletics in his last outing.
8. What’s up with Luke Keaschall?
Luke Keaschall is off to an abysmal start, currently slashing .227/.311/.302 with one home run in 196 plate appearances.
While the power was always going to be virtually non-existent, the poor batting average is surprising. The strikeout rate is still great, so expect Keaschall’s .268 batting average on balls in play (BABIP) to normalize and that batting average to rise.
9. What’s up with Geraldo Perdomo?
Last year’s biggest surprise has crashed back to Earth this season, as Geraldo Perdomo is slashing .224/.340/.353 with two home runs and seven stolen bases in 190 plate appearances.
However, the .248 BABIP suggests Perdomo deserves better, especially since his plate discipline metrics remain strong. It’s only a matter of time before he gets hot.
10. Where’s Kevin McGonigle‘s power?
I wouldn’t worry too much about Kevin McGonigle’s lack of power. He’s showing advanced skills at the plate, including a 14.2% walk rate and a 12.8% strikeout rate.
It’s not like McGonigle’s barrel rate is that bad (9.9%), so it’s only a matter of time before the power binge comes.
