Fantasy Baseball Two-Start Pitchers: Rankings & Pickups (Week 9)

You should be grinding fantasy baseball two-start pitchers to give you an advantage over your competition.

Each week, I will be giving you a breakdown of the two-start options for your fantasy leagues, broken up into the following tiers:

  • Must Start: Pitchers you have to start because of their talent and/or matchups.
  • Should Start: Pitchers that are rostered in most formats and probably should be in your lineup.
  • Here We Go: Pitchers that you are probably starting in most formats, but have some level of risk to them.
  • Feeling Lucky: Pitchers that are risky, but viable in deeper formats.
  • Desperate Measures: Pitchers you shouldn’t use unless you have no other choice.

Make sure you are aware that when making fantasy baseball start or sit decisions that these projected two-start pitchers are subject to change.

Fantasy Baseball Two-Start Pitchers: Week 9

Let’s explore this week’s fantasy baseball two-start pitchers, ranging from must-start options to those you should probably avoid.

Must Start

Should Start

Landen Roupp (SP – SFG) vs. ARI, at COL

Landen Roupp has been fantastic so far, throwing 55 innings with a 3.27 ERA and 61 strikeouts. However, there is some risk heading to Colorado, and Roupp has been pretty lucky with a low batting average on balls in play (BABIP) and strand rate.

You are still starting Roupp in most formats, but regression will come at some point.

Bryce Miller (SP – SEA) at ATH, vs. ARI

Bryce Miller has been great since returning to the mound, throwing 11 innings over two starts with a 1.64 ERA and 10 strikeouts.

Miller has a couple of tough matchups, with one in Sacramento and the other versus a good Diamondbacks team, but as long as he looks as good, you are firing him up.

Tanner Bibee (SP – CLE) vs. WSH, vs. BOS

After a slow start, Tanner Bibee has been very good, throwing 41.2 innings over his last seven starts with a 2.59 ERA and 34 strikeouts. He has a pretty safe floor, which makes him a good start in almost all formats.

Here We Go

Anthony Kay (SP, RP – CWS) vs. MIN, vs. DET

After a rough start to the season, Anthony Kay has been great over his last three starts (16.1 innings) — 1.65 ERA and 14 strikeouts. He has two good matchups at home and should be started in most formats.

Michael Wacha (SP – KCR) vs. NYY, at TEX

Michael Wacha is the epitome of a safe floor pitcher. He continues to put together a solid season. However, he has a tough match at the beginning of the week, and his lack of strikeout upside means he is best served for deeper leagues this week.

Ben Brown (SP, RP – CHC)) at PIT, at STL

Ben Brown has been pretty great since entering the Cubs’ rotation, throwing 13 innings over three starts with a 2.08 ERA and 16 strikeouts.

Brown is still stretching out, so there is a risk he won’t go deep enough to qualify for a win, but he has been so good that he is worth the risk.

Spencer Miles (SP – TOR) vs. MIA, at BAL

Since being called up, Spencer Miles has thrown 29 innings with a 2.17 ERA and struck out 29 batters for the Blue Jays. He has yet to go five innings in an outing, but he is a good bet to get there soon, and these are nice matchups.

Feeling Lucky

Keider Montero (SP – DET) vs. LAA, at CWS

Keider Montero has pitched decently, but he’s also been very lucky and doesn’t have much strikeout upside. He is going up against two powerful teams, but ones that do strikeout. He is a high-risk/high-reward play.

Sean Burke (SP – CWS) vs. MIN, vs. DET

Sean Burke has struggled recently after starting the season really well. He has great matchups this week. There is a risk that the struggles continue.

Zebby Matthews (SP – MIN) at CWS, at PIT

Zebby Matthews has pitched well since being called up, but he is dealing with lesser velocity and stuff. He has decent matchups here, but against teams that can hit for power, so he is another risky option.

Desperate Measures
