Fantasy Baseball 10 Burning Questions
1. What to expect from Kade Anderson?
Kade Anderson put up a 1.06 ERA and a 0.64 WHIP with a 40.5% strikeout rate and a 3.9% walk rate in 93.1 innings at Double-A this season. Those are some of the best minor league numbers you’ll ever see. He’s the top pitching prospect in baseball right now. I expect immediate ace-like production.
2. Is Tanner Scott a top-10 closer now?
With Edwin Diaz back on the injured list (IL), we can consider Tanner Scott a top-10 closer for the rest of the season. He’s been terrific for the Dodgers, putting up a 2.28 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP with a 32% strikeout rate and a 5.6% walk rate in 51.1 innings. It’s wheels up for the rest of the season.
3. Can we trust Kodai Senga as the closer?
There are obvious question marks surrounding Kodai Senga as the Mets’ closer with Devin Williams on the IL, but if you’re desperate for saves, there’s no harm in giving him a shot. Since shifting to a high-leverage reliever role, Senga has a 1.50 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP with a 29.2% strikeout rate and a 12.5% walk rate. The command is an issue, but he’s been effective.
4. Is Cade Cavalli an ace?
It’s time to start talking about Cade Cavalli as a frontline starter. In his last eight starts, Cavalli has a 1.98 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP with a 30.3% strikeout rate and a 5.9% walk rate in 50 innings. This looks like the case of a talented pitcher who has found his groove. Expect him to be a popular draft target next year.
5. How good is Jackson Merrill?
Jackson Merrill is once again having a second-half surge. Since the All-Star break, Merrill is slashing .301/.328/.577 with nine home runs and five stolen bases in 131 plate appearances. It’s the second year in a row that he’s done this. Remember, he’s still only 23 years old. Perhaps these are the early signs of a full-out breakout, which should come next year.
6. How good is Jac Caglianone?
Jac Caglianone looks like a budding superstar. Since the All-Star break, he’s slashing .336/.366/.598 with seven home runs in 112 plate appearances. Next season, you’re likely going to see a monster year. For now, we can enjoy what looks like a young hitter who has found his groove.
7. What should we make of Mason Montgomery?
Mason Montgomery has pitched eight scoreless innings since July 27th. During this stretch, he has a 53.1% strikeout rate and a 6.3% walk rate. He’s converted three saves in this span, so the Pirates are starting to deploy him in the ninth inning. This is a player who could emerge as an elite closer.
8. What should we make of Ben Joyce?
Ben Joyce has returned to action for the Angels, and the results have been terrific. He has a 42.1% strikeout rate and a 5.3% walk rate with three saves so far. The Angels won’t get many save opportunities, but when they do, Joyce looks absolutely lights-out. Pick him up if you’re desperate for saves.
9. Is Griffin Conine legit?
Griffin Conine has been a nice and cheap source of power for the Marlins, posting a .277 ISO and a 16.8% barrel rate. While strikeouts are a major issue, you can easily fire him up when he’s facing a righty. Between Conine, Owen Caissie and Kyle Stowers, the Marlins have done a good job extracting more value out of left-handed power bats.
10. Is Luke Keaschall legit?
There was a lot of hype on Luke Keaschall coming into the season, but he got off to a slow start. However, Keaschall is slashing .316/.417/.463 with three home runs and two stolen bases in 116 plate appearances in the second half. He’s showing us why he was so highly touted coming into the year. This is another case of a young hitter getting on track.
