Cubs sign Justin Turner to add infield depth for 2025

The Cubs have signed veteran infielder Justin Turner for the 2025 season, adding experience and depth to their infield mix. Chicago had been linked to Alex Bregman earlier in the offseason but pivoted to Turner after Bregman signed with Boston. The move also provides insurance at third base following prospect Matt Shaw’s (oblique) minor injury early in camp. Turner played for the Blue Jays and Mariners in 2024, posting a .259/.354/.383 slash line with 11 home runs over 139 games.

Fantasy Impact:

Turner’s role in Chicago will depend on Shaw’s development and performance at the major league level. While Turner primarily played first base last season, he has extensive experience at third and could see time at both positions. If Shaw struggles early, a timeshare at third base could emerge. Otherwise, Turner is likely to settle into a backup role behind first baseman Michael Busch. His on-base skills and plate discipline remain strong, making him a viable depth piece in deeper fantasy formats.
