Houston Astros manager Joe Espada said Wednesday that Yordan Alvarez is dealing with a muscle strain on the top of his right hand. (Julia Morales on Twitter)

Espada said Alvarez needs rest and added that the team is hopeful he’ll be activated when first eligible on May 13. In his absence, Jose Altuve has handled most of the designated hitter duties, with Zach Dezeno seeing time in left field and Cam Smith in right.
