by Bruno Mulé | Braves Correspondent | Thu, Feb 26th 10:45am EST
Elder's four-seam fastball sat at 92.8 mph overall last season but jumped to 93.7 mph during his final seven outings. He compiled a 2.82 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with 41 strikeouts against eight walks across 44.2 innings over that stretch. (Mark Bowman)
Fantasy Impact:
Elder credited the velocity uptick to training with biomechanics expert Bob Keyes, whose previous clients include Hall of Famers Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson and Greg Maddux. His four-seamer averaged 93.3 mph in Wednesday's spring debut against Pittsburgh, where he allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts and no walks over two innings. "He was popping a lot of 95s late in the season last year," manager Walt Weiss said.
