Paul Skenes overpowers Rockies in another gem Tuesday

by David Leisering | Pirates Correspondent | Wed, May 13th 6:50am EDT

Paul Skenes took a perfect game into the fifth and a no-hitter into the seventh on Tuesday, but settled for eight innings of two-hit ball to defeat the Rockies, 3-1.

Fantasy Impact:

Skenes overwhelmed the Rockies right out of the gate as he struck out the first six batters he faced before Willi Castro put the ball in play on a bunt attempt to open the third. His perfect game bid ended with two outs in the fifth when he hit Tyler Johnston with a pitch. Four batters later, Mickey Moniak ended the no-hit bid with a one-out single in the seventh. Skenes settled for eight shutout innings, allowing two hits while not walking a batter and striking out 10. He became the first Pirates' pitcher in the Expansion Era (since 1961) to strike out the side three times in a game and became the fourth pitcher in the Modern Era (since 1900) to throw eight scoreless innings allowing two hits or fewer and not issuing a walk in consecutive starts. Over his last five starts, Skenes has not walked a batter and has struck out 38 over the course of 32 innings. Since his Opening Day start against the Mets, Skenes is 5-1 with a 1.09 ERA in his last eight outings, allowing six runs on 21 hits in 49.1 innings with a 55:5 K:BB ratio. Overall, he is 5-2 with a 1.98 ERA and a 0.64 WHIP in nine starts this season. He's scheduled to pitch again on Sunday, at home, against the Phillies.
