David Murphy likely to retire

David Murphy has been released by the Twins. He told reporters that he's likely "done playing." (Source: Pioneer Press)

Fantasy Impact: Murphy was cut by the Red Sox before camp broke this spring, and he signed with the Twins to see if he could return to the majors. While it's not yet official, Murphy indicated that he's decided to retire from the game of baseball.

With Murphy opting out of his contract, the Red Sox have 48 hours to decide whether they want him on their opening day roster or let him become a free agent. (Source: redsox.mlb.com)

Fantasy Impact: Murphy will probably catch on with another team if he becomes a free agent but he does not have much fantasy relevance just yet. If Murphy can get regular at bats than he might be worth a look as a fill in for daily lineups or DFS. Until than leave him on the waiver wire.

Murphy is in the lineup and batting leadoff against the Twins on Friday, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

Fantasy Impact: Batting lead-off on Sunday against the Twins, Murphy went 1-3 to move his hitting streak up to six games. During this streak he has had two home runs and six RBI's for the Angels. He should be able to put up great numbers with Trout, Calhoun, and Pujols batting behind him. Look for him to continue to have a hot month of September if you need him in your lineup.

David Murphy hit a three-run homer and Mike Trout added a solo shot to power the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-3 victory over Felix Hernandez and the Mariners on Tuesday night.

Fantasy Impact: Murphy hit a three-run shot on Tuesday off Hernandez in the 3rd inning. This was his first home run since hitting one in back-to-back games to start September. Murphy should continue to see good looks at the plate with Albert Pujols and Trout only a couple spots back of him in the order. For now, he continues to be a boom or bust player.

Industry sources are reporting that the Indians have traded OF/DH David Murphy for Angels' minor league prospect Eric Stamets.

Fantasy Impact: Murphy, who is making $6 million this year with $7 million club option for 2016, will platoon in the Angels outfield with newly acquired Shane Victorino and David DeJesus. Eric Stamets is a 23 year old, glove-first shortstop in his second season in Double-A with a .666 OPS in 62 games. He doesn't appear to have much fantasy value.

David Murphy was removed from the original lineup to face the Royals on Tuesday. His place at DH will be taken by Jason Kipnis, with Mike Aviles coming in at second base.

Fantasy Impact: The Indians' RF/DH has been a trade target for several teams, thanks to his .297/.341/.432 slash line against right-handed pitching this season.

Category: , Rumors

According to various sources, OF/DH David Murphy is drawing interest from the Angels and other teams.

Fantasy Impact: David Murphy is making $6M this year and has a $500k buyout on next year's $7M team option. The 33 year old has been a useful bat against right-handed pitchers and has formed a productive DH platoon with Ryan Raburn. With the Indians slumped at the base of the AL Central, Murphy could become expendable. Over his last 60 games (37 starts & 23 pinch-hitter), Murphy is hitting .322 (.834 OPS) with three home runs, one triple, ten doubles and 22 RBI.

David Murphy will get the start at DH vs. RHP Chris Bassitt and the Athletics on Saturday.

Fantasy Impact: David Murphy has thrived against right-handed pitching this season, with a .327/.368/.482 slash line. He has five home runs, 21 runs and 23 RBI. Look for him as a low-cost option to fill out your DFS roster.

David Murphy went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Wednesday's victory over the Astros.

Fantasy Impact: David Murphy is enjoying a .958 OPS since June 1. He has played in 23 consecutive games, although only started 13 of them. As only a part-time player, it is difficult to include him in your lineup.

By Gavin Tramps

DH David Murphy went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's victory over the Rays.

Fantasy Impact: David Murphy belted his fifth home run of the season as he continues to thrive in the DH platoon with Ryan Raburn. Murphy is hitting .329 and is working his way into mixed league viability. Over the last 28 days, he has scored more points that Steven Souza, Carlos Gomez or Gregory Polanco, despite having had fewer at-bats.

David Murphy went 4-for-4 in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader vs. the Orioles.

Fantasy Impact: David Murphy got the start in left field to give Michael Brantley's back a rest at DH. Murphy hit four singles. The Indians only managed a total of 12 hits over the two games. David Murphy is hitting .336 and is a useful, cheap pick up for daily lineup teams when the Indians are facing right-handed starters.

David Murphy went 0-for-1 as a pinch-hitter in the loss to the Orioles on Friday.

Fantasy Impact: The Ryan Raburn / David Murphy platoon is working well for the Indians, especially with the regular DH Nick Swisher still on the DL. Look for David Murphy to get at least one of the starts in Sunday's double-header. The Indians face two right-handed starters (Chris Tillman and Ubaldo Jimenez). Murphy has a .841 OPS vs. right-handed pitchers with four home runs and 18 RBI in just 149 plate appearances.

Walk-off RBI for David Murphy

Mon, Jun 22nd 6:08pm EDT
By Gavin Tramps

David Murphy continued his run of clutch hits with an RBI sacrifice-fly in the ninth inning vs. the Rays on Sunday.

Fantasy Impact: David Murphy is hitting .324 with a .800 OPS with runners in scoring position. Even when starting on the bench, he is proving to be a valuable pinch-hitter for Terry Francona. Expect Murphy to see most of the DH starts vs. RHP whilst Nick Swisher is on the DL.

David Murphy will start at DH and face the Cubs' RHP Jason Hammel on Thursday.

Fantasy Impact: David Murphy is hitting .320 with a .809 OPS vs RHP, including three home runs, eight doubles and 16 RBI.

David Murphy went 0-for-2 at DH in Sunday's loss to the Tigers. He was replaced by debutant Francisco Lindor.

Fantasy Impact: David Murphy is still enjoying a .333 AVG and will expect to see a good amount of playing time at DH whilst Nick Swisher is on the DL. The promotion of Lindor suggests that Mike Aviles and Zach Walters will also be vying for playing time with the Ryan Raburn / David Murphy platoon.

David Murphy had two hits and two runs as he went 2-for-3 vs. the Tigers on Saturday.

Fantasy Impact: As the left-handed half of the platoon with Ryan Raburn, David Murphy was not expected to be this good. He has a 1.018 OPS over his last 28 games (just 72 at-bats) and is hitting .355 with men in scoring position. Whilst this productive, you can expect Murphy to steal a few more at-bats away from Nick Swisher when the Indians face right-handed pitchers.

David Murphy will DH on Saturday vs. Justin Verlander and the Tigers with Nick Swisher starting on the bench.

Fantasy Impact: David Murphy is becoming an intriguing option for DFS. He is hitting .331 with a mere 8.4% strikeout rate. All but three of his at-bats have come against right-handed pitchers. Murphy has a 20 wRC in just 131 plate appearances. Only Corey Dickerson & Alex Guerrero have reached 20 wRC in fewer plate appearances.

Outfielder David Murphy went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit RBI in the Indians' victory over the Mariners on Saturday.

Fantasy Impact: The David Murphy / Ryan Raburn platoon has a .311 AVG with five home runs and 26 RBI. When everyone is healthy, it looks like David Murphy will struggle for at-bats as the left-handed half of this platoon. At the moment, his .314 AVG and the knack to produce RBI off the bench makes him a useful addition.

Four-hit day for David Murphy

Sun, May 10th 5:27pm EDT
By Gavin Tramps

RF David Murphy went 4-for-4 with a double and three singles vs Trevor May and the Twins on Sunday.

Fantasy Impact: David Murphy has been mainly restricted to pinch-hitting duties since Nick Swisher returned from the DL. After yesterday's pinch-hit home run and today's four hits, Murphy is proving that he can produce in whatever role the Indians need. The left-hander is currently hitting .298.

David Murphy hit a two-run homer with his only plate appearance in Saturday's loss to the Twins.

Fantasy Impact: Terry Francona said that one of the things he likes best about David Murphy is that he "is always ready to hit". As a left-handed bench hitter for a prodominantly left-handed lineup, Murphy will not see that many at-bats but he is certainly making the most of his limited opportunities. This was his third home run of the season. With Nick Swisher at DH, Murphy (& Ryan Rayburn) will go back to being 'hitters off the bench' rather than platoon partners.

Category: , Game Recaps

DH / OF David Murphy singled and ground into a double-play before being replaced by the right-handed Ryan Raburn.

Fantasy Impact: It cannot be easy for David Murphy as the left-handed half of the DH platoon within the Indians' lefty-heavy lineup. He has a .245 AVG (12-for-49) with two solo home runs. With Nick Swisher due back on Tuesday and Terry Francona's desire to have extra bullpen arms, there could be some tough roster moves to be made.

Outfielder David Murphy went 2-for-2 with a walk against the Brewers in the final Cactus League game.

Fantasy Impact: David Murphy entered Spring Training knowing that the addition of Brandon Moss could be the end of his tenure with the Indians. However, with Nick Swisher starting the season on the DL, Murphy should find plenty of early season At-bats at DH and in the outfield. Despite his final spring stats being less than impressive - 53 AB, 4 R, 0 HR, 3 RBI, 0 SB, .245 AVG - he could be a sneaky pick up in the first few weeks.

David Murphy was in good form in Sunday's Cactus League victory over the Padres, going 2-for-3 with two singles, a walk and an RBI.

Fantasy Impact: Injuries and illness have plagued the Indians' spring camp but at the moment it appears that 33 year old David Murphy is most likely to secure the 4th outfielder job.
